Meryl Streep overrated? by MathematicianLeft07  •  last post Feb 9th

There is a guy on YouTube named David Patrick Green and he made a video on Meryl Streep saying that she is not a great actor and perhaps the most overrated actress of this generation. If he right?? Or is he high on something??

Confused on how to make a audition scene video by n8th8n0101  •  last post Feb 9th

Actor furiously stares out the window. (He had taken acid and just brutally attacked his mom). Actor sees his mom, hysterical, in the street, he comes to the doorway. Actor starts to sway. He’s uneasy on his feet. Actor sees a couple across the street on the phone with police. He runs to them and then violently tries to get inside their home, slamming his body against the door. Actor breaks down the door and goes after the man inside. Actor is shot and collapses dead on the floor. I’m so confused on how I’d do this. I looked up some self audition videos and they say to just set up horizon video on iPhone and all but I don’t know how I’d do the scene where I collapse dead lol. Can someone help me out? Do I actually bang on my apartment door to look like it? Do I act it out in air? The prompt says can be done with or without dialogue so I would just say nothing.

Debate: Does one ever truly 'give up acting?" (JAIME LANNISTER MEME HERE) by CuspChaser111  •  last post Feb 9th

Does one simply *give up acting*? I've seen a lot of posts lately on social media and it's odd to me when actor friends say they are going to 'give up acting' and do something else. **I have friends that are painters, sculptors, musicians that have never written something like this.** If they decide to go off the road or their band breaks up and it's for the best and they want to pursue their corporate job more/whatever, that's great - but at parties, etc. they'd pick up a guitar and play and still create on downtime. Or paint something on the weekend for fun. If you're an artist, you're an artist. You know? Anyway I find it kind of obnoxious. I can understand if they are no longer pursuing it as a career/auditions but something feels off about quitting acting. It will always live in you. Acting is a beautiful pursuit and I feel it adds so much to us at our corporate jobs, as parents, our EQ's in life, everywhere really. Anyone else feel this way?

Re-Reading Bill Esper's The Actor's Art and Craft by Pennwisedom  •  last post Feb 8th

So, I just wanted to start off by saying that I am not sure this post has any real point to it, it is just some of my reflections. Some people may remember me as this sub's resident Esperite. A certain number of years ago I went to the Esper Studio, recently (AKA Now), was the first time I read the book since being in the program. Going through the book again with a different perspective has been an interesting experience. For one, even though I knew this somewhere in my head, like 60%, is devoted to what is really the first few months of the program. The first few months up to the first scene in the program is such a blur in my mind it was hard for me to remember just how much of an impact this had on me until I thought about it again while re-reading the book. But also the book doesn't really prepare you for just how many activities you are going to need to come up with over the course of the year, and just how draining that is by itself. On that note, while there are certain activities that have remained very clear to me since they happened, reading the book both reminded me of several activities that I did, both those that worked and those that didn't work. With the benefit of hindsight, after some prodding from the book, and several years I was able to think of them in a much clearer way. Also it really reminded me just representative the characters of the book are to people in the class. While I don't recall anyone as bad as Kenny, we did have someone with those tendencies, and we did lose a few people during the year, though as far as I know this was their own choice. I think overall, the biggest realization I had from the re-reading is that the program, and by that I really mean the first year, is such a transformative experience that even if I were to do it again, it wouldn't be the same. I don't think I really appreciated that as much as I should have while I was going through it. I definitely have more thoughts, but this seems like a reasonable place to stop because I'm not sure this thread is going to go anywhere. But anyone else can share their thoughts or ask questions or whatever.

Help with translation! by eldanejasper  •  last post Feb 8th

Hello friends! Actor from Germany here. I recently got invited to the LAMDA recall (for MA Classical Acting, International Students), which will be on Zoom - ugh. I'm preparing a couple of Shakespeare speeches, but would also love to include some german stuff. Specifically this one monologue that originally got me into Drama School in Germany. It's from the play "The Prince of Homburg" by Heinrich von Kleist. Now, there are translations into English, but I can't get hold of one. So I took it upon myself. And probably murdered the whole thing... Would any of you take a peek? and kindly tell me if it's utter nonsense? or if at least parts of it make some sense? That's all I'm looking for! I know it's a lot to ask - I would really appreciate it! (see speech below) For context: the title character (young officer) disobeys his orders, attacks the enemy - and wins. Despite the heroic victory, he's court-martialled and sentenced to death. He doesn't take it well... PRINCE OF HOMBURG. Oh, on the way that led me here I saw That grave being opened, by the glow of torches, That shall receive my own remains tomorrow. See, these mine eyes that look upon you Shall be with night o’ershadowed, and this bosom With murd’rous bullets shall be pierced. The balconies are ordered on the market That overlook this sorry scene, and he, Who, on life‘s summit, gazes on the future As if it were a promised land today, Shall be interred in narrow boards come morning, Leaving behind a headstone stating: he once was. Oh, but God‘s earth is beautiful to me, my friends! Let me not, beg I, ere my time has come, Descend unto those sombre shadows there! Where I have failed, may I be justly punished, But why the bullet of all things? The Prince, May he relieve me of all duties if he must, Discharge me from the army in dishonour, God! Since I have seen my grave, I want to live, I do not care for honour anymore. I will renounce all claims to happiness. My love for Natalie, please tell him that! Is all but gone. Within this sorry bosom All tenderness is vanquished. She is free, Just like the fawn upon the heath. With hand and mouth, As if I never was, she give herself away, And if it be Karl Gustaf, king of Sweden, I will commend her for it! I shall go Unto my lands and manors on the Rhine. There shall I build and there shall I dismantle Until my sweat pours. I will sow and reap, As if for wife and child, indulge alone, And when I’ve reaped, I’ll sow again, again, And chase around this life in circles, Till it sets naturally at dusk – *then* die. This life The derwish calls a journey. And a short one, If we be honest! From a brief span here On this fair earth unto a long span under. Oh, that I Could settle half-way! – Yes, I know they say A sun does shine there, too; yes, and across More blooming fields than here, I do believe it! But It is a pity that the eye does moulder That shall be witness to such wondrous sights.

Mic recommendation by YabokuTakemikazuchi  •  last post Feb 8th

Hello voice actors of reddit! I’ve done voice acting for a few years, and have decided it’s time to upgrade equipment as I’m currently building a studio in my house. One of the things I’m going to upgrade is of course my mic. I’ve been thinking about getting the Røde NT1 or Røde NT1-A. My voice is extremely deep, so I was wondering if there’s anyone else out there with this mic who would like to give their opinion. Or if you have any other mic recommendations, please tell me!!

I’m meeting with a someone from an AI company this week. They claim to understand voice actors’ concerns, and that they are 100% ethical. Thoughts? by SoDoesNotMatter  •  last post Feb 8th

I’ve been in VO for 10+ years but this would be my first time working in AI. I have all the normal concerns about usage and licensing and compensation, which they assure me are addressed, but most of the professional community I’ve seen still seems to be wary, and that only amateurs are doing this right now because they don’t understand their value or how much they’re being taken advantage of, similar to Fiverr and other race-to-the-bottom sites. That said, I’m sure this is the future of at least *some* of the VO marketplace, and I don’t want to miss out on genuine opportunities. Any VO pros worked in AI before and/or have tips on what to ask about and clarify during this meeting? They seem legit, but I’m still cautious. I’m not sure how this discussion will go, so I’m not mentioning the company by name in case that breaks a rule.

Should I do unpaid work as a new actor? by riverose33  •  last post Feb 8th

I have been trying to build up my reel and have just been offered a role in a feature. Unfortunately it is in a city 4 hours away from me and would be unpaid for 8 days of filming. Because I work part time at my day job it is my main source of income I can’t justify accepting the role unpaid because I can’t afford to not work. But it would also help me with my reel and experience as an actor. Any thoughts?

Where/How do I audition for Euphoria Season 3? by CatBootyhole  •  last post Feb 8th

It was just confirmed for Season 3 and they have done open calls/hired actors with no previous experience. The show has a lot of relatable trauma for me. I can act reasonably well for someone with no professional experience (besides school plays or projects), and cry on cue, I live in Los Angeles and am a female aged 18 years old.

Stage Fright by BMCA2001  •  last post Feb 8th

I don’t know if anyone here will know the answer to this but, I might start taking beta blockers for my anxiety due to the physical symptoms my anxiety causes. Do any actors who are currently on this medication think that it may have a negative impact on your performance in any way? This is my biggest fear with starting the medication.

Trained Actress who is looking for representation, but cannot find any :( by Odd-Box7611  •  last post Feb 8th

Hi so I'm an seventeen year old actress! I have been acting since 2009! Recently over the years since 2018 I've been training for film and t.v acting. I reached out to agents and managers all summer 2020 and 2021, with no luck. I have recently sent out new materials, and gotten little to no replies. All of the replies I have, states "you are not a fit for my roaster". I'm in Michigan which could be an affect, but I am able to travel. I'm just looking for the right manager and agent! So I guess I'm asking any tips? Any agents or managers you recommend? I dropped my IMDB and a self tape if anyone would like to check it out! I would love to here your thoughts! ***SELF TAPE!!!*** [https://vimeo.com/672111482](https://vimeo.com/672111482) [***imdb.me/keziahsmith***](http://imdb.me/keziahsmith) [https://resumes.actorsaccess.com/Keziahsmith](https://resumes.actorsaccess.com/Keziahsmith)

Advice about drama schools by JosephKerr9081  •  last post Feb 8th

Hey all! I have recently been accepted by Drama Studio London for their Master’s course in professional acting. They will hold a place for me until March 4th, so I am advised to respond to my offer by then. However, I have also applied to other drama schools in London that have yet to concretely accept or reject me. I passed my stage one ALRA audition, but the stage two audition will likely take place after March 4th. I have also sent in my first round of self-tapes to Rose Bruford but they have yet to respond. I would greatly appreciate any advice on whether or not I should accept my Drama Studio London offer. The institutions I have applied to are all part of the Federation of Drama Schools in the UK, but are any of them considered more prestigious and recognised with greater industry connections than the other? Thanks everyone and stay safe out there! P.S. I am aware that pursuing a Master’s is not always recommended, given that many actors out there have attained success without any formal training whatsoever. However, I seek to keep my options open to a career in lecturing and higher education as well, for which a Master’s degree will prove useful. (I feel it is safer having a back-up plan to at least have a source of income while auditioning, rather than simply waiting at home for a phone call that may never come)

Do you think Abbey Lee Kershaw is a good actress? by fastestgunlnthewest  •  last post Feb 8th

I have watched some of the films/series that she is in and checked imdb reviews, and its kind of mix. While the majority seems to like her there are some strong criticism. But because she is not that well known, there arent a lot of reviews. So, what do you think?

Any conservative leaning voice actors? by Frosty_College9337  •  last post Feb 7th

I notice that a lot of voice actors just by following their social media accounts are left leaning. Not saying it's a bad thing. We can all have our own opinions and I am aware that the entertainment industry is mostly left leaning. But you tend to find a couple of conservative leaning entertainers here and there. So I was wondering if the same is true for voice actors. The only one that pops in my head is Jim Cummings who mostly keeps to himself and doesn't seem to have a problem with his fellow voice actors. But it did make me wonder if there's any other conservative VAs. Again I'm not bashing anyone for their political views. I'm just asking a question that I had in My head recently. That's all.

How important is location in submissions? by thefilmgal1  •  last post Feb 7th

I live in CT but am trying to get work as an actress in New York. I have been submitting and have had quite a few auditions. My question is this…. Most auditions ask for locals to New York. It’s an hour train ride from me and not hard for me to get into New York. I lived there for three years and know the area well. Can I say that I am local to New York when submitting or doing my slates? Do casting directors just look past you if they see you are from another state? It’s not like I am far, but my ID says CT. HELP!

Acting while hypersensitive—is it possible? by barfingclouds  •  last post Feb 7th

Hello there, I’m a 30 year old guy who was just in Los Angeles for 3 years, with one of my main aspirations being acting. I’m also a musician and love writing songs and singing passionately. I ultimately left Los Angeles and sadly decided I can not handle being an actor even though I would love to express myself that way. Right now I’m just trying to see if there is any way someone like me could succeed. I have hypersensitivity. For me that makes it so new environments, sounds, and people’s energies can really effect me. It can take me maybe 4-5 sessions before I’ve acclimated to an acting class, usually needing to take lorazepam the first few times. I was a full time background actor for 6 months in LA. I barely pulled that off. I think I very often looked uncomfortable and was fortunate that the camera didn’t get close to me most of the time because I would not have pulled it off. While I was a background actor, sometimes they’d give us an hour or two to stand around in the scene while they tweaked the lights and the camera. That at least gave me some time to get used to the environment and feel more comfortable. Then I’d see how they’d bring in the main actors. The actors would just appear at the very end of set up, do their scene, and then move on. Every time I saw that, I thought “there’s no way I could just walk into that without being so uncomfortable and overstimulated that I could do what they’re doing.” I’d want at least half an hour to get used to all the lights and people and everything going on. So what do you guys think? Is there a way for someone like me to succeed as an actor? And a couple other points— hypersensitivity is a lifelong condition, it is not the same thing as being shy. Secondly, I’m looking at a bizarre medication named Nardil that may help me, any success with that?
