How does the casting process work from start to finish? by watermelongarden  •  last post Aug 6th

As the title says, how exactly does casting work? From posting the breakdown through finally casting that perfect actor. Especially for “open calls” on Actors Access aka anyone who is active on the site would be able to see it and submit. Would they call in/ask for self tapes from hundreds? Thousands? What about if it’s an “through agent only” sort of audition? I’ve read some articles about this, but they all seem to be from years ago and I’m not sure how much it’s changed now with self taping. Any and all details would be greatly appreciated :)

Stage Names- Are They Necessary from the Beginning of your Acting Career? by sweetfilipinothot  •  last post Aug 6th

Hello! I’m just starting to get into acting- last week I portrayed a featured background character in an Emmy award winning Prime show and was contacted to do some more work with the show. If the featured scene has already been filmed- would it even be worth asking to be credited using a stage name rather than my birth name? I feel like my birth name is horribly plain, and I’m considering changing it legally anyways. The season won’t be released until November or December, so I don’t think it’s too late to ask, but I’m also afraid of appearing high maintenance or fussy. To go off of this, are stage names only reserved for actors further along in their careers, or is this something I should be using from the start of whatever career I develop? Any guidance would be so appreciated!!!!

how many meetings with reps did it take before you found one that you actually LIKED? by fuckingdiscrete  •  last post Aug 6th

because i can't stand 99% of the people i meet in this industry. they vomit their ego at me for an hour and i leave the meeting questioning why I'm even doing this. i dont care that you know somebody that knows the president. that doesn't impress me. the agents I have are soulless business people, the actors I meet are entitled and competitive and gross, so many people want you to work for free and then attack you if you stand up for yourself and your value... it's all just a very sad state of affairs. where is that human connection? where is the caring about one another? where is the ART? am I crazy for wanting these things in the people I work with?

acting help by katmotes  •  last post Aug 6th

Hi guys! I want you all to know that actor Aaron Marcus, a full-time actor, (he is also a producer and an author) for over 30 years, is now teaching people how to get into the industry. There is a free webinar of him that you can watch and many other links you can click on for more and more info on acting. He will even do one-on-one coaching. He does charge a price for his time, but sooo worth it. His passion is to help those that want to get into the industry. Check out his site at [**www.howtoactandmodel.com**](https://www.howtoactandmodel.com)**.** The modeling part is actually commercial acting, not fashion modeling. Also, you can find him on social media: [facebook.com/how](https://facebook.com/howtomodel [twitter.com/aaronmarcus](https://twitter.com/aaronmarcus) [howtoactandmodel.org/coaching](https://howtoactandmodel.org/coaching) IMDB: [http://imdb.to/2jQJFil](http://imdb.to/2jQJFil)

Non-actor here with a vague question about percent of people you think can be taught to act (let's use a convincing cry as the metric). by Kid_Charlema9ne  •  last post Aug 6th

I know there are a lot of factors such as how much time they'd have to learn, etc., and some may object to a "convincing cry" as the metric, but I'm just curious to hear your estimates based on what you've seen in your acting classes. I ask because it seems like an incredible ability to invoke that kind of emotion with the pressure, say, on a movie set, to get the shot done and move on, a ton of people watching, etc.. I'm sure there's a wide range, but how long, on average, do you find it takes people to develop this skill and what percent of people can ever really develop it? Thanks!

there just HAS to be better jobs than waiting tables to pursue this. by fuckingdiscrete  •  last post Aug 6th

i fucking hate serving so much. it's grueling and mentally and physcially exhausting, and i've been doing it for too long. but the cost of living in LA has gotten so high, bedrooms are fucking 900$ and then car and insurance and classes on top of that... honestly the lifestyle is just a fucking nightmare to me, a total miserable unrewarding nightmare. BUT I LOVE ACTING. and i hate that I can't even BE GOOD at it when i'm stuck spending the vast majority of my time doing something i hate, that takes all my energy, and then it affects my craft or me even being able to PURSUE it. all the while being surrounded by disgusting selfish greedy rich people who judge me for being poor and working class and dont help me out in any way shape or form. there has got to be a better way. there has GOT to be a better way to make money in this goddamn city then waiting fucking tables. because I've realized that I'm not going to make it as an actor if waiting tables is my job while pursuing this, i'm just not, i hate it too much, it's fragile as fuck, all it takes is 1 night of not making enoguh money or 1 week the egotistical manager gives you less shifts and BOOM then you're barely getting by for the month.... it's just horrible! maybe 10 years ago when rent was affordable could somebody make this work, but these days? 2019? this is insane. please for the love of god, PM me if you work a different kind of job. you don't have to post it publicly here, but help me out. it is such a horrible feeling to realize i'm not going to make it because of fucking MONEY. not becuase i'm a bad actor but because of fucking MONEY. god i hate this world

Haircut advice by the-nigel-thornberry  •  last post Aug 5th

I (M, 24) have had long-ish hair since moving out to LA less than a year ago but I want to try out getting it cut short. I thought having it long would give me less competition since most males have shorter hair but now it’s at a length where my niche is really small. I realize this will require all new headshots but I’m nervous that it will confuse casting directors and potential agents/managers after they watch my reels. Would it be wise to cut it at a similar length as my first headshots and wait to get representation and have them make the choice? Or should I just cut it to the length that looks the best on me and hope the new headshots will suffice? Should I also take headshots before getting it cut to have a reference of how it looks at its longest? Is haircut anxiety a thing for other actors? Any advice or stories would be appreciated

Performing Shakespeare by worldtraveler9700  •  last post Aug 5th

I'm primarily a musical theater actor but want to branch out and try Shakespeare. I didn't really study it in college from an acting perspective, so would the best course of action be to find some classes to take? Thanks!

Long rant! But I need help!! [ACTING] by DJamwal  •  last post Aug 4th

Okay guys, you need to tell me if you think I’m passionate about acting or not, because I’m so, so conflicted, and another person’s point of view would be really helpful. Please read the whole thing. I know it’s long, but I need all the advice I can get. So here goes: I’ve been watching Bollywood movies since I was a kid, and watching them made me realize that I wanted to be on a big screen like that and be a famous actor. So, I decided to observe the facial expressions and the character portrayal choices of the actors every time I watched a Bollywood movie in the hopes of doing well while playing similar characters as those actors. Slowly, I had begun to have questions like “How does an actor’s eyes have that emotional intensity?” or “How do actors have facial expressions that are so natural?” I searched for answers, and I finally found many videos that answered these questions and made acting so intriguing. After watching these videos, I felt ready to train hard to make it in Bollywood and do all kinds of projects to apply the techniques that I’ve learned in these videos, since the technique has made me want to try playing different characters. Now I can’t get acting out of my head! I’m considering studying to be a medical sonographer and keeping that career while auditioning for roles. Though I’m interested in playing different characters, I don’t know about a Bollywood career, because I don’t want to be unemployed on the streets of Mumbai in the worst case scenario. And after reading stories of other strugglers in Bollywood, doubts are getting to my head about whether I’m passionate about acting. Fame in Bollywood or earning enough money to live comfortable is my goal. I won’t settle for less. So I don’t know whether I’m passionate enough to try to become a Bollywood actor, since I’m afraid of not achieving my goal and afraid of living in poor conditions there. What do you guys think? Should I experiment with characters while having a stable job or risk it and try Bollywood? I’m torn, and need another’s opinion. Please let me know soon. Thanks!

For actors from Europe: by ibunofen  •  last post Aug 4th

My Albert Wesker by thatonedrewguy  •  last post Aug 4th

It has always been my dream to be an actor -- especially in the genre of animation via voiceover. I was curious as to what people thought of this video I shot years ago for fun. I can do requests, I just want to make a splash somehow. Question about foreigner career in US by ionnny  •  last post Aug 4th

Hello everyone! The thought of getting into acting got into my head few weeks ago and i decided to give it a shot. But i can’t stop thinking about one thing. Can a European guy (Poland to be exact) can make a huge career in US? Of course US have biggest productions, most known actors etc. Everyone would like to work in LA/NYC. And i was thinking even if i would be a reaaaally great actor, my birthplace would matter a lot? I totally have no unwanted accent. I was exposed to American culture since i was like 11 and thank God to that my english sounds just fine. I’ve decided to take a language course to sound little bit more like a native speaker even tho i think its already pretty good. Well in that case, the main question is: will my ethnicity can be a barrier to become a international star when the language skills are really high level? What are your thoughts? I’ll be pleased to hear your thoughts.

From the Radio to the TV! by Aidan Harper  •  last post Aug 4th

It all started with the Rock It Real radio show that has been around for 8 years; hosted by Aidan Harper under his presenter name of DJ Squeek (Aidan was also the music journalist for Cape Times’ “Top Of The Times” for 10 years). He has interviewed the likes of Celine Dion, Graham Gouldman (10cc), Ed Kawalzyck (LIVE), John Lodge and Justin Hayward (Moody Blues), Gary Brooker (Procul Harum), Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden), Ian Hill (Judas Priest), Will Turpin (Collective Soul) and many more. The show was created as a platform that mainstream media lacks and it focused on real music giving exposure to new bands and discovering new SA rock music while at the same time bringing undiscovered SA rock to the forefront and showcasing bands that would usually be passed over by mainstream channels. It began as a pre-recorded show and then to a weekly live online broadcast. The shows have uploaded to the Mixcloud podcast platform (https://www.mixcloud.com/aidan-harper). Now… The radio show has evolved and we have assembled a quirky and fun production team to create an off-the-wall SA music TV show. Most music and lifestyle TV shows are pretty much the same format: Rock It Real will be delving into the lighter and more unconventional side of music industry journalism. In order to achieve this, Rock It Real’s TV show will be targeting the ‘funtrovert’ side of its audience using visually dynamic and exciting content while still giving valuable information and playing seriously good South African rock music. The show will air online for starters. As the Rock It Real team has been an integral part of this scene for so long, it understands the musicians, the fans and the industry so it won’t be your normal run-of –the-mill music TV programme. In order to be able to do this, the Rock It Real TV team needs funding for production and some operational items. Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=22053152

Tips for a shy 16 year by Sddog12  •  last post Aug 4th

Hello. I never wanted to become an actor nor I've never thought about it but I kind of want to get into acting, see what it's all about. I'm super shy tho, like very shy. There are some actors I really admire and look up too. What are your tips and things I should know? How should I overcome my shyness?
