Buddies, have you heard of the #SOVAS the society for voice arts and sciences a Open World Audition is AVAILABLE on the site
I’m a NYC actor who wants to be represented on the west coast as well. How did you guys make that happen?
Hello all, my name is Shane and I am the founder of an in-development startup that is working on building a large scale, multi-occupation/industry, multi-feature professional network that is purpose built for the arts and entertainment industries as a whole. Simply put, we are building the "Linked In for Artist and Entertainers". In general, I'm hoping to get feedback from those of you that are in any stage of your acting careers (even those just looking to break into the industry). While we are wanting to build a platform that appeals to a wide range of occupations (actors, models, musicians, casting directors, set designers, the guy that holds the fuzzy microphone, etc.) we want to ensure that we are including the tools and features that you would find most valuable and what you would like in a platform both personally and professionally. We would be extremely grateful for you to give us feedback on a few things: - What would it take for you to join a professional network specific to the art and entertainment industries? - Do you currently use any other existing network? If so, which one(s) and what do you like or dislike about them? - What potential tools/features would be most important to you? Lastly, if you are interested in keeping up to date with our development or are interested in joining our Beta, feel free to post or message your email along with a little about you. Thank you in advance and we look forward to hearing your feedback!
Hello actors! I have been doing a lot of thinking lately and would love your opinion. Basically something happened in my life that pulled me away from the acting world. It was hard for me to keep up but I tried the best I could. I kept my agent who would send me to a few auditions here and there but that's about it. Now my life has changed for the better and I'm ready to jump back into the business..but how should I do it? I want to get rid of my agent and find a new one. But I don't have enough material for a demo reel (i've only done a few commercials and an episode of a tv-show but nothing with substance) and I don't want to join a low-grade agency again, I'm already a part of one lol. I've taken a few classes and auditioned for a few student films, even cast in one. But that's about it. Can I get your advice on how to proceed from here? Thanks in advance and I wish everyone the best!
Hey everyone! So I'm doing a little actors workshop for my Brother's special ed class. My plan is to do one or two theatre games, talk a little bit about acting, and then I'm going to be teaching a few very simple moves (so far I have jazz square and one that I don't know what its called) and putting it to Broadway's "The Little Mermaid" - Under the Sea (about a minute of music). I need ideas on simple dance moves (links would be great - I'm really not a dancer). Then I need ideas for theatre games you would play with kids 10-13 years old. They must be simple and not involve memorization or really talking in general, as some of his classmates don't talk. So something active and light hearted, preferably with no winner or elimination! Thanks guys :)
I'm looking into workshops with casting directors, and I asked my agents who they'd like to see me get in front of, and they just said "email us and tell us who's giving classes, and we'll tell you if it's worth it" Well, two problems with that. 1. There are multiple workshops with different CDs at different studios every single day and 2. Sometimes my agents just don't answer my damn emails. So, has anyone here worked with or otherwise formed a relationship with a CD that they love? Who are the big casting offices in NYC that I should be prioritizing? I'm primarily thinking about film right now. I'm very uneducated when it comes to this kind of stuff, trying to do my research all over.
There wasn’t a “no stupid questions” post for today so I guess I have to make an idiot of myself this way, hooray! So I’m a male Actor/presenter, and I had headshots taken recently (and they paint me in quite a flattering light if I do say so myself) but I’ve just got back from a contract that I had to grow a beard for. Personally I’m a fan of it, so I kept it but now I’m starting to put myself up for more things and my headshots don’t have me with a beard. My question is simply: How likely are most people/auditioners to care? I’m more than happy to shave it if asked (my body is my tool, I’ll shape it how it needs to be to do the job, y’know?) and I typically go for smaller roles/short films if that would affect anything (not by choice, it’s just what I normally manage to land auditions for and I wouldn’t have the first idea where to get a “decent” agent for anything bigger, I’m still new to the game) Anyway yeah... That’s the question I guess!
If they like me, will they offer me a contract on the spot? What’s a standard contract? What questions should I ask? Thanks everybody!
I'm 14 and I want to act. Of course I don't actually look like a 14 year old guy. I look 18. I don't know what I can do as of right now. Summer is starting so I can't join my schools club but I still want to progress as an actor. I have no clue what I'm doing but I know all I want to do is to give a stunning performance.
Hi, I'm looking for some advice from anyone who has studied/is familiar with the technique of Practical Aesthetics. I'm about to start a new class which focuses on PA. Initially, I was really excited about it. However, the more I read into it, the more I am concerned. The class passionately dismisses the concept of characterisation and, instead, preaches the fact that the actor is able to simply find everything they need in the script alone. The whole 'as if' idea sounded really intriguing at first, however, I'm now beginning to question whether or not PA is really for me. I love the idea of delving into a script to fully discover a character and form their psychology (if that makes any sense at all), in order to bring that character to the stage/set and portray them faithfully. So, my question is, is it at all possible to create your character using PA, or are you only ever really playing yourself in slightly different ways? Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Cheers!
I recently was asked to send in a self tape. I know a little bit about blogging but I normally don't vblog. I know being able to submit self tapes when asked is become a frequently asked question in my life. I wanted to know if anyone has any tips...
if you are just interested in doing films and plays is it still worth trying to get an agent? I'm a comedian/actor starting out and I would like to audition for more things and could use the help finding these opportunities. I wanted to submit to an agency but wondering if its worth it. Thanks.
I've filmed over 10 films now, and only 3 have actually sent my footage (and to my luck, the 3 were the worst quality films I've done to where the footage is useless in my demo reel). I've reached out to all of the people responsible for these films; one said they are trying to get it picked up so they can't release any footage (mind you they've been trying to do this for about a year); one was part of a web series and when I asked about my footage, they said they'd send it after the entire series was release. they dropped the series and still refused to send me my footage. the rest either claimed they were still working on it when its been months after filming (these arnt big budget movies, theyre short films done on regular cameras) or flat out ignored me. Does anyone else have difficulty getting their footage? also note I was not paid for any of the films ive done as the footage was supposed to be my return compensation. It's great to have stuff on a resume but what good is it when I have no footage to show for.
\[Sorry if this off topic\] My SO and I have been in a solid relationship for 4 years and she's always loved acting but never pursued it seriously. She finally decided to take acting classes and audition for roles. I'm 100% dedicated to supporting her in whatever makes her the happiest and that's not going to change, but whenever I remind myself that romantic roles will eventually come her way, I can't seem to come to terms with it in my head. I'm really not a jealous person under any other normal circumstances of life, but it's challenging to have to imagine her kissing or having fake sex with other guys. I'm not worried she'll cheat on me or leave me for some better looking guy actor, hence it isn't a jealousy thing, it's really just the thought of it and the fact that it'll be more difficult for me to enjoy her work. As much as I try to convince myself that it's all fake, it's an art form, it's awkward for both actors, etc... I'm still having trouble fully coping with it. I'd love for you guys to share your experiences so I can finally look past this silly feeling and be a better partner for her.
Hi, I will be moving to Atlanta soon and I do a lot of background work. I love it for the extra money and being on set. What is the best area to live in as an extra or actor in the Atlanta area? Thank you....
Hmmm....why does voice-acting never have a category of its own? SAG-AFTRA seems to treat VO as a red-headed stepchild too. Apart from that frustration, I'm a former Emmy award-winning TV News anchorman, now seeking more opportunities in voice-acting and on-camera commercial work. I have agents. I have coaches. It's opportunities I'm seeking (like the rest of you, right?). I see stage 32 as mostly a resource for screenwriters, producers and behind-the-scenes people. Am I in the right place or not?

Hi Reddit Acting Community: I am without theatrical representation currently and thought I would reach out and attach my acting reel and resume. I am gay. Not femme, but not "average guy." Like, people usually pick up on me being gay pretty quick, but not by sight. I'm nervous that this will really get in the way of me playing straight guys. How do other gay guys feel about this? And are there online classes you would recommend on how to act more straight? If you want reference, here is a link to me in a vlog. Can you tell I'm gay? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTGb6PMYvlg&t=34s
Alrighty, so this might be a little too far for this subreddit? I'm not sure, but I'm GENUINELY intrigued in this conversation and I'd love to discuss it with people. So, two things: One of my techniques is to (after already having read the script) is reading the script high. This allows me to really think about the script in ways I hadn't before, and pay attention to little minute details that I may have overlooked. I find it enhances my focus and opens up my mind, and a lot of the times I find a much better way to naturally act out a scene. I then tape it and watch it back later when I'm sober. Secondly, I like to watch television high and study the acting. I discovered this by realizing that when I watch movies high, I could TOTALLY tell when people were acting, and it made everything seem much more fake to me. So I started studying acting this way. By watching and being able to see what looked fake, I found it easier to take that and turn it into something real. So what do you all think? Serious replies only, please, and I promise I'm being completely serious. I am a serious actor, and study theatre, and this is part of my process.
I was a promising actor at school and it was an aspiration, but ruled myself out for wearing glasses (and having bad enough eyesight that I can't go without), and also being SAsian, deciding that those two things would strike out almost every role. Was that premature? Contacts and laser eye surgery are not options at the moment.
