I'm currently in a show where one of the actors is giving me direction with blocking and acting choices. This is one of my biggest pet peeves, and I think it is more prone to happen in community theater--which is what this project is. My director isn't being very helpful (he's more worried about the lines being 100% right), so I can see why this actor is doing this. I want to say something, but I don't want to come off as a total douchebag. Has anyone ever encountered this? Did you confronted the situation or ignored it? It is still relatively early in the process, and I'd like it to shut down immediately before it gets out of hand.
Hey reddit! I’m a senior graduating high school in a couple months. My grades and test scores are terrible so college would be hard to get into. Even if I did get good grades for college, I still wouldn’t go because I do not see myself doing anything else other than acting, it is my passion and nothing else would make me happier. I’m born and raised in Hawaii so I know I would have to move to California for exposure. Should I just pack my bags and leave to California with 10k in my pocket and pursue my dreams? Or should I stay in Hawaii and build up my acting resume and attend a community college to get my liberals degree, so I have a back up? Edit: Thank you all for the responses! You truly are inspiring and helping me shape my future. If and when I make it as a stable working actor, I will be sure to give reddit a shoutout! :)
I first saw "City Of Ember" when I was 11, and I loved that movie so much, as a kids movie and only as such, however, last July (2017) I was looking through old movies my family had, and rewatched it. Halfway through the movie, something connected, and I realised this was the Brooklyn girl. Fast forward a few months, and I see Ladybird, and go "HOLY FUCK THATS HER!" I'm not saying she is the best actress / indie darling (although she isn't even that, just under appreciated in my view), but for a second can we talk about her? Whats your favourite performance of hers? If anyone knows about her method / training feel free to share. I just feel like she has had so much spotlight recently, but no warmth from it. (Additionally feel free to criticise, if you think needed.)
Atlanta is in a right to work state. Do the producers still have to pay a fine to Taft-Hartley you for SAG-AFTRA if you book a co-star or a small part in a movie there? Is that a problem for new, non-union actors like it is in L.A.? I have been reading Jenna Fischer's book and she says that she only knew of one person getting a Taft-Hartley in all the time she was struggling in L.A. and she had to do background until she had the vouchers to get in. I'm starting to think that it would be smarter for me to go to Atlanta first instead of L.A. until I can get in the union if I don't get in any of the BFAs I am about to audition for or even after I finish college if I don't get a big league agent from the showcase since you can't Taft-Hartley yourself for New Media projects anymore. Thoughts?
Hello fellow actors, I was wondering what you thought of my headshot? I usually get cast as the cop, detective, or tough guy. My coach said I need a shot of me smiling to do commercial acting which I might agree with. Thanks! https://i.imgur.com/8O0IOGY.jpg
Hi All! I'm new to acting and have recently gotten a couple of auditions. However, I've had to decline some due to audition or shooting day conflicts with my day job. At this point, I'm gonna take the plunge and commit to acting. But of course, I have to pay rent. I know that actors are notorious for being waitresses and waiters -- is that really flexible? I know someone whose had a few restaurant jobs and they aren't able to change shifts too often for auditions. What are your experiences balancing your survival job and auditions?
I write for my own site which helps actors (primarily newer ones, but we're expanding into more in depth topics soon) and I'm going to be interviewing a group of directors and agents about the industry. Things that actors may not know, or think about, or just sage kind of advice. Is there anything any of you would want to know straight from the horse's mouth? I will gladly add it to my list and post the answers when I get them!
What other sites do you visit for all things acting. (I.e: learning, job postings, community advice etc) Backpage Actors access Are the only two I know so far. Any others?
Long story short I wanted to give acting a shot. Never been theater when I was in high school or college, but the feeling of wanting to give it a try has grown on me. Call it mid-life crisis lol. In any case I am looking for recommendations for acting schools that will teach a n00b to act in film/tv. Whenever I google for something this list of schools shows up often https://www.backstage.com/advice-for-actors/resources/top-acting-schools-los-angeles/ Anybody got any advice if these would be a good start? If so which one and if you have any other recs. Thanks!
Senior year sucks dick. The people in my life go on and on about how being an actor won't get me anywhere and that I'd be better off chasing something more practical etc. But being an actor is all that's on my mind. This post is going to seem incredibly stupid and naive to you older folks, but I'm having an internal decision making struggle. My grades are terrible, I've missed early decision deadlines, and am only missing more as the weeks to my graduation trudge on. I've had sleepless nights where I've attempted to clear my mind and think thoroughly about what I'm going to do with my life, but I can never land on a definitive set of steps to take. Is going to a university even worth it to pursue an acting career? I live in the Denver metro area, should I use my money to buy headshots and just audition everywhere I can until I find an agent? My adventurous spirit tells me to throw myself into the scene with my high school theatre training and see where it takes me, but the logical side of me knows how reckless that is. I don't know what to do, where to start, or how to process this crazy sudden life change. Please, someone either snap me out of it or help me figure out where my life is heading.
We're hosting an open call for male and female actors for a short social media promotional video. If selected, this is a paid gig ($50/hr) and will probably take 3 hours to film. Filming will take place next week in Anaheim Hills, Ca. The dialogue is minimal (2-3 lines per actor), so nothing to be intimidated by if you're just a beginner. I will say that our client prefers a clean cut, professional look for both female and male candidates. If you're interested and can make it tomorrow (1-31-18) at 10am, please send me a PM and I'll give you the address. It's an on-camera read, so please show up looking as put together as possible. Thanks!
CASTING CALL FOR MALE ACTORS BASED IN THE SOUTH WEST AREA OF THE U.K. THAT IS THE BRISTOL REGION. THIS PRODUCTION IS SOURCING MALE ACTORS TO PORTRAY AMERICAN POLICE FORCE TEXAS RANGERS. How do you make the jump from student films to tv? I have a reel and would like to stop going out for student films. In my experience student films are generally a waste of my time and the ones that aren't are at the competitive level of anything else (NYU, Columbia, etc). So with a reel and no agent how do I get my first co star. They don't really put casting calls out on AA unless it's a super specific call. So I assume casting goes to their favorite agents to get an actor. Does this mean I need an agent to get an audition? I'm just feeling really stuck at the moment. Seems like I've reached a ceiling for right now.
And how do you work through those days? How do you get out of that emotional block?
Hello everyone, I'm new here. I've wanted to try acting for YEARS I'm in my early/mid twenties. I live in NYC. I went to a studio today to audit a class and I got soooo intimidated/nervous I just left. I honestly am embarrassed and feel so lame. Everyone seemed so confident and not to mention it was the west village so everyone was good looking as hell. I just feel like I'm never gonna get there and I'm not getting any younger tbh. Just wanted to vent to other Actor's to see if anyone has dealt with this anxiety.... Thanks....
Hello All! I just moved to LA about a month ago and I need some advice on what I should be looking at next. I don't have a manager or agent, but I have a reel, headshots, a website, and about 9 student shorts on my resume. Should I be looking to get a manager at the moment? I'm applying to parts everyday on actor's access so that's where I'm at at the moment. Any advice is appreciated :)
So this is just a forward thinking , fingers crossed, type question. My son has submitted a self tape for a minor speaking role which lead to a call back in person audition. That is scheduled next week so nothing has been offered but I do have some questions? Since this is a mutli-day and possibly few week shoot, How does he legitimately get out of school? For his background / extra work, he's been "sick". (don't tell). But I would want to make sure we get the proper permission or whatever else is needed from the school to make sure he completes his work. Tutors on set? School approved? While he's still a long shot, I Would love to hear what others have done and what the right approach is.
Hey actors! Thought I would drop this here - we're a group of thespians who worked in tech for a long time and decided to make something a bit more fun for us to show off voiceover talent. Hope you like it! Oh - and here it is! www.usetold.com. It is only for iPhone right now but we have plans to make it available on Android soon! Feel free to ask us anything!
