Here to make this post for the demotivated actors here. I just want to say if you're sad That "You're not gonna make it", you have to change that. It doesn't matter who you are or where you live, you can make it, you can be the one in a million, you can be that star, so don't let some guy on r/acting tell you that you won't, take the advice given to you by the genuine people on this sub and start grinding, you can do this, I believe in you!
Yeah it's that guy! https://youtu.be/CgIfpqXHJgA
Hi there. I'm a non-union mid-20s actress. I was just offered to sign with Aqua Talent commercially. I was also offered Angel City commercially, and across-the-board as soon as I get SAG-E. Since Aqua is a top 10 commercial agency, I'm torn. Any advice?
Hola All, So I've been asked to be the main (and only) actress in a very big deal art/performance exhibition in Asia. It's featuring work from the world's best artists and performers (NO PRESSURE!!!) While I've worked for this artist before, it was mostly on abstract film projects, but this is going to be a live performance installation. The script is.... well abstract. Doesn't make a lot of sense. Sometimes it's just mumbling words. Or words that don't make sense. I also have to change into two different characters during this monologue (if I can even call it that). It's quite bipolar or schizophrenic. And the switch is within seconds. And these two characters are very dystopian and basically from another world. It's a bizarre concept that I kinda love, so I wanna do it justice - but the cards are stacked up against me time wise. Does anyone here have any references that pop to mind of similar plays, skits, movies etc.? I've had zero time to rehearse, 2 hours to workshop and I know it's a mortal sin to watch other actors, but I NEED some inspiration here. I'm just not finding it on my own and I don't have very many days to nail this. (Yes it all sound so unprofessional but it's a long story) Any help would be insanely appreciated. And any tips on memorizing gibberish to the tee would help too!
We had our acting showcase over the summer, virtually. Our of the ~30 people in my year, 6 got agents and they’re all relatively minor agents. 5 out of those 6 students were boys, and though I’m sure it’s not a sexist reason as to why more boys got interest than girls, but it really does feel kind of unfair as they’re comparatively mostly worse actors - just tall, good looking intimidating, etc but they all look very similar (all white, blonde-ish and fairly tall, cute, that sort of Netflix or Sex education look). I don’t wanna diss on my classmates but they’re pretty generic and I feel like it’s kind of unfair that they got all the attention and girls were completely overlooked. When I tried to bring it up with one of my tutors in a private zoom meeting, she said it was how the industry worked, that there are more parts for men so naturally more men get picked up every year, that the female 16-25 category is the hardest to break into etc. The one girl who got an agent is a decent actor but she’s also the daughter of an actor and she already had some stage credits (child actor) before we started our course. I’ve gotten myself professional looking footage through the school but it’s only about a minute long, not enough for a proper reel. It’s on my spotlight anyway. I’ve emailed about 20 agents with it but haven’t heard back yet... I’ve included monologue self tapes with it, nothing. I tried contacting film schools that do student short films and never heard back except from a couple that said they advertise everything through Spotlight. But they don’t? I honestly don’t see any castings like that, as I am unrepresented I only see castings for extremely specific things such as, VO actor aged 50-65 Spanish accent, or actress playing age 14-17 with Downs Syndrome, etc it’s never things I qualify for, sadly - the ones I could apply for go to agents. I’ve joined Backstage bc it was free for my course and as I can’t afford Mandy, I keep applying to things that turn out to be not so useful, like they claim it’s a full socially distant production of Macbeth but actually it’s on zoom, or things like that. I don’t understand. All through lockdown I did paid workshops on zoom with agents and casting directors, I have tried to promote the hell out of my work on twitter and Instagram and it feels like it’s never going to pay off. I realize I sound pretty darned grumpy on this but I’m just frustrated as I have now got a mountain of student loans from a leading UK drama school and I’m unable to even get an agent to help me find work. Being a 2020 grad sucks. My mental health is suffering. What do I do?
As much as I love his movies, I think his acting skills are average at best. Isn't it funny when you like the characters an actor portrays, but doesn't find his acting skills as good as his roles/movies?
I feel embarrassed for asking this, but should I be listing "acting" in my survival job resume? On one hand, I'm guessing it should be good to let future employers know that I'm pursuing acting. Up to this point I've been holding down one part-time job, so I suppose it'd be good to let them know I haven't been lazy and doing nothing outside of that one gig. At the same time, I haven't really been "working" as an actor. No projects, no background work, only one class for about a year now. But still... it definitely has taken hours of commitment per week. What do you guys do when it comes to your survival job resume?
I just watched a video on YouTube of great musical moments and while I'm not a fanatic with musicals, it just hit me that I miss those moments of being onstage: the electricity, the energy, the connection, presenting your hard work to an audience, etc. With Covid, it doesn't seem like we're going to get theatre back any time soon. Anyone else feeling that grief?
I am a part-time actor with a day job/career. Can I realistically compete with an actor who is a full-time actor, that has gone to a prestigious acting school, is training everyday, lives in LA, has his materials (HS, Demo reel, Resume) on lock, has an Agent already, has list of credits, trains with the best acting coaching, is in shape and works out everyday, and is good-looking? I have not gone to a prestigious acting school, I live in a smaller market, I work on my craft a couple of hours each day, my materials are good, I don't have an agent, I have a few short films under my belt, I am kind of in shape and work out sometimes when I have energy after my day job and am moderately good-looking. How can I think to even compete for a small number of roles available everyday with people that are committing so much?
I stepped on the scale and it wasn’t good. The presidential elections plus depression-anxiety multiplied by sweatpants minus open gyms added a few. More than a few. My manager says I’m not the only actor fretting. I’m not interested in watching every calorie like Tracy Gold in the 80’s. So far I’ve lost 5 lbs this month. What are you in big cities doing? Bc in Manhattan going for a run means running into people, homeless people, and hopping over dogshit & toddlers (extra points) all suffocating in a face mask. I can’t afford a Peleton & yoga classes on YouTube are just...not yoga. While regular people can “own” their weight gain (ha ha! Love yourself!) we are actors I don’t wish to now become a character actor. Thanks.
I’m always scared I’m gonna end up just being an actor who never gets a break and just ends up having to be a working actor, and I just want more than that
Hello I’m 15 years old and in sophomore year of high school and trying to be a actress before junior year oof highschool. If anyone has any tips and tricks please tell me. Thank you
For me, the most surprising thing for me to learn was that David Kaye voiced Clank from Ratchet and Clank. Then to find out he also voiced Commissioner Gordon from Batman: Arkham City and Optimus Prime AND Megatron from Transformers Series was stunning. His vocal range is astounding, one of the best IMO. For you, which voice actors surprised you the most or a lot when you found out they voiced two or more characters and made them sound wildly different to each other?
Hello, im a 25M and I have an annoying habit I try to break. There is always tension in my vocal cord, resulting in a higher pitched voice. I can relax it for a few seconds and talk with a wayyy deeper voice, but as soon as I make variation in my tone(you know, to not be boring) , I lose it and get back to having tension in my vocal cords, and I higher pitch. How do I break this habit? How to I get to always talk with relaxed vocal cords?
Hello. i’m graduating high school soon, and i want to become an actress. i’ve acted in lots of primary school plays, but that’s rather outdated now. i’m a very unique person as people describe me, but in the acting world i’d guess there’s a lot like me. i want to go to a scottish acting school, and gain experience but i’m not sure where to start, and who will accept me. any advice whatsoever would be greatly appreciated!!
Guys I’ve been practicing my acting I’m only a freshman but I want to try at this career bc I really like today I told my mom I would like to be an actor and I think she thought I was joking. She then told me that I have to go into the business my dad works in to make a lot of money which is something I’ve never been interested.Does anyone know how much actors make. Not Hollywood actors but just like the not so famous ones bc I really want her to support me in this and I don’t think she will if she thinks i won’t make much money out of it
