Think I'm SAG-AFTRA eligible... but have no proof by tubulear  •  last post Aug 3rd

Hey all! Posting here as I'm in a difficult situation and am not sure what to do. I would really like to join the union and *think* I am eligible due to the fact that a few years ago, while working as an extra in a union TV show, I was "upgraded to principal" AKA given two lines of dialogue. [According to Backstage:](https://www.backstage.com/magazine/article/non-members-need-know-sag-aftra-58712/) >If you're working a background job (or as an extra in a commercial), it's sometimes possible to be upgraded to principal -- for instance, if you're directed to a line of dialogue. This is rare, but if it happens, not only do you get paid more, but it also makes you SAG-AFTRA eligible. I now realize this was a rare opportunity, but unfortunately at the time I didn't think much of it and have no record of my contract or original paycheck stubs, nor access to a payroll printout. Thinking back, I don't even remember them updating my contract or giving me a pay rise, although I'm pretty sure they should have... Is there someone from the production company I can write to to obtain one of these things? Has anyone been in a similar situation? Again, this was about 4 years ago, and the show has long gone off the air. Is there any chance at all that any official financial records still exist from that production?. It's frustrating, because I can prove that I have a copy of the episode and can prove that I had dialogue in a union production, but a rep SAG-AFTRA confirmed that they would only accept those three things (Original Paycheck Stubs, Performer Contract, or Payroll Printout) as proof. **\*\*Word of advise to young actors: save everything!\*\* :/**

How'd you get into Clear Talent, CESD, Eris Talent , Media Artists Group , Osbrink, DDO, Aqua? by strongmaya18  •  last post Aug 3rd

Hey all! Does anyone have experience or want to share their insights on how they got into these agencies. Or how to go about it if you want representation. I'm getting headshots with Steph G so at least my biggest marketing tool is at its best. I am training and creating my own heat. I know it's the kind of thing where they approach you, is the best. They also say network, but what examples of places could you recommend I start? If you got a story to tell on how you got in, I'd love to know how! This career is a journey, I want to make sure I'm not missing anything when it comes to busniess side of acting. Advice from one actor to another! Cheers :)

Stage name for foreign actors? by throwItInTheBin5298  •  last post Aug 3rd

Hi all, I’ve been thinking about this one quite a bit. I’m African, and while my name is easy to pronounce over here, if one day I was ever to go to the States and pursue acting with my studies, it’s destined to be mispronounced. I’m not against people mispronouncing my name in general, as I could always correct them; the problem comes when the audience and other people literally can pronounce my name cause of the culture difference. My surname isn’t hard to pronounce, it’s European (I think). My first name though is (or at least it is for westerners). I think if people could learn how to pronounce my name I wouldn’t have a problem, but what if they can’t and I end up being stuck with a name that doesn’t stick? Hence why I’m wondering about a stage name. In all honesty, I would prefer my real name, but if a stage name is the way to go to make my name stick in people’s heads then I’d go with that. Any suggestions? I’m a black man. If possible maybe the name could start with a V. My surname isn’t an issue, just the first. And I personally don’t think it’d be hard to learn my name. It’s nothing too complicated, it’s only four letters lol. My name is Vuyo. (I really can’t teach you how to pronounce it over reddit lol, but if you need to know I’ll try my best). My surname is Polson (pronounced, “Pole-sin”)

The Actors Academy YouTube by urbz808  •  last post Aug 3rd

Who is this guy? Also what are his qualifications? What has he been in to be allowed to scam ppl into paying $150 for acting sessions? I’ve never heard of him and he really thinks he’s doing something out here. Literally the last video he posted was about “Millie Bobby Brown’s Acting Advice” and they are just clips of interviews from other interviews. What in the scam is this bullshit? He doesn’t even give his name and that’s all you need to know how everything he’s doing is a scam jfc

My schools theatre program is trying to have more of a social media presence. by DownSyndromeTurtles  •  last post Aug 3rd

Hi, so I’m on my schools theatre board and we’ve decided to start having more of a social media presence to get more kids involved and more attention to our club. We’ve decided to do skit writing, interviews, and other fun little segments that we plan on posting to our Instagram. I’m not really expecting this to be the best when we first start, but I’m excited because it will be a way for all of us to build skills in our acting and script writing. What do you guys think? Have any ideas? Advice? I know I’m only a highschool actor and not really a professional, but if this doesn’t fit here I will remove :)

Advice Filming a Sex Scene by bacon_francis_7  •  last post Aug 3rd

So I'm an amateur actor and was recruited to take part in an independent, small-budget film. I have a lot of respect for the writer/director, but learned that the role requires a fair amount of nudity and simulated sex. I'm okay with that for the most part, but I'm worried about getting aroused and how my actress co-star is going to respond. I don't want her to think I'm trying to take advantage of the situation. The sex scenes themselves are pretty realistic (the film more or less falls into the mumblecore genre and tends to have things like dialogue/blocking/sex be pretty realistic). They're also super sensual. Not to mention the fact that my costar is incredibly gorgeous, and I'm not sure how my body's going to react when we're simualting thrusting and all that. We've already begun filming some of these scenes, and it's definitely been hard to keep myself "contained." I was hoping after having talked with my costar about this it would help alleviate how much of a stressor this has been, but it's only made things more awkward. I definitely don't want to jeopardize production, but I'm worried about it seeping into my performance. If any of you guys have acted and/or done sex scenes like this, I'd appreciate any advice. Happy to provide further detail if needed. I'm 22M and my costar is 21F if that helps.

I need help of y'all by twentytwopilotsFAN14  •  last post Aug 3rd

Alright so I want to be an actor, can I start it a bit up at age 12?

What to do when you're questioning your talent (in a funk)? by forthe_99and2000  •  last post Aug 2nd

I usually don't internalize auditions when I don't get the gig or callback, because I know that's part of it. But I've recently switched from being an actor on the side to doing it full time. I've moved to another city and most of my friends here are also actors. Lately, my self doubt has been surfacing and it's pretty nasty. My friends and I are all in the same age and ethnicity group. We go to the same auditions for the same roles, and I'm noticing that all of them have gotten booked and I'm the only one who isn't. I know you're not supposed to compare yourself to others but I guess because I always know who got the part over me, it makes me feel like I'm inferior and less talented than everyone else. And of course I've fallen into the rabbit hole of negative thoughts and it's turned into me feeling like if everyone is getting roles except me, essentially it must mean I'm just not a good actor. People always say that the life of an actor has its ups and downs, sometimes you'll get work, sometimes there will be stretches of time when you won't, etc. Has anyone ever looked over their career so far and felt like they never had any ups yet, no stretches of time where they got roles that felt prominent to them? Thus feeling like it's been strictly downs and no ups to balance it out? How does one deal with that? I hate this feeling.

I used to be polite re:side nose by sandrasnet  •  last post Aug 2nd

When I saw an actress, who seemed to have dermatitis where their nostrils connect with the start of their cheeks, i gave them the benefit of the doubt, that you can only act under bright lights while wearing makeup for so long unless you have the greatest help. i personally think that's where they fuck up the silicon glue application when they put on their fake nose. so now i, along with a group of people with similar 'social leanings', go hunting for someone like that on my days off, to find answers. my wife has a lot of very difficult to answer questions regarding things she may have read while checking out with groceries, and its my job as a man to solve those problems for her.

Actors, what does your schedule look like? by cinema_owl21  •  last post Aug 2nd

I’m really trying to become more consistent with the acting field and would love some insight about what y’all do on a daily basis. Do you always work out every morning? On average how many auditions a week do you do? How many acting classes a week/month? Do you wake up at 7 am everyday? Work 2 jobs? Everyone’s journey is different, so basically what do you do during your week that makes you feel like you’ve done the most to help your career? Thanks:)

What kind of role is this and how much should I pay for it? by Gjork  •  last post Aug 2nd

Hi! I'm working on a short (3 min) film for an online video contest. I need about five "henchmen" for the big finale scene. What kind of role is this? They interact with the protagonist, but don't have any lines. I'm thinking it would fall under "Featured Background" but I'm not sure. Also, what would you say is a reasonable rate for this kind of work? In the past, I haven't felt too bad about only paying actors $100 bucks or so because I knew they were building up their portfolios and gaining experience just like I was, but with this kind of work there isn't anything the actor can put in a reel. I'm in LA if that matters. Appreciate the help.

this is not working out for me and I'm miserable and broke and depressed. how can i FORCE myself to do something else with my life? by Ilikedogs1500  •  last post Aug 1st

i'm so tired of waiting tables, i'm so tired of being poor, i'm so tired of everything. i haven't been able to afford an acting class for years, it's all just a nightmare, it really really is. i have no idea what else to do with my life and i have no idea where to even look. how to even make myself feel like anything else is worth pursuing. but i have to. because pursuing acting is for RICH PEOPLE. period. and im not rich, and if I keep wasting more years of my life doing this i'm going to be in serious trouble. how do you move on from this? how do you release yourself mentally from this temptation? i'm just destroying my life pursuing this, straight up, because i'm working class. everytime i've tried to quit and move on in the past, i get depressed and come back to "trying to be an actor" again, but its like, i'm not able to make ANY progress because this is simply for rich people and i can't even afford a decent place to live in these expensive cities let alone find a goddamn student film auditon let alone make a DOLLAR off of this! it's just a never ending nightmare I want to truly release myself from before it really is too late to have a decent life of any kind. i just don't know what to do anymore, i really don't

Headshot-Age Range-Character Type Post - Aug 1 by AutoModerator  •  last post Aug 1st

Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting; please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.

What are the biggest mental/emotional/social struggles you face as an actor? by AlisonHaselden  •  last post Aug 1st

Hey guys! I'm an actor and host of the podcast "It's a Slate of Mind" ([click here](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/its-a-slate-of-mind/id1456014234?mt=2) to check out the show!). I'm currently working on my next season and want to make sure that the subjects of each episode are on point with what our entertainment community is experiencing. Rather than focusing on technique and business, my show focuses on sparking conversations about the mental, emotional, and social aspects of the business that we all face, but don't openly talk about enough! What are some struggles in these areas that you all face/have noticed around you? Thanks so much for your help!
