Does a bachelor degree in fine arts help or would pravite coaching be better which will help you get the connections you need to go far in this industry. And becoming a successful actor
Hi, everyone! I am a director that is going to be staging Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's COMPANY in my theatre's 2020-2021 season. (I would give more information, but I have not made my season announcement yet.) This will be the traditional COMPANY with a male lead. I have seen almost every major new production of COMPANY, including the gender-bent revival. Since this is going to be the original version, I would love to get an opinion from the fans of this musical, especially actors. I have a creative team, but I believe in listening to actors FIRST: \- In what ways can I make the original production with a male lead more modern? (I have worked very hard to make small revisions to the script, editing out some of the more sexist comments made by the husbands toward their wives.) **My main goal is to make sure that "Robert" as the leading man is still relevant.** \- My theatre is in the Southeast. This is an ambitious musical to bring to the stage in South Carolina. Many who will see the show will be seeing it for the first time. If you were seeing this show for the first time, would you want a character/ small synopsis guide included in the Playbill? How can I market this show to those people? \- Any personal opinions on the original COMPANY would be of great interest to me.
Real, first person experiences please! Who here has "flipped" a nonunion production to union (actors), or flipped their own production (filmmakers) to accommodate a union actor? If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you haven't done it. What I mean, for actors is, as SAG members, submitted to a NU role and then asked the production to make the production SAG so that you could work it, and they complied and made the production SAG. Or, as a filmmaker/producer, planning a NU shoot, received this request from a SAG actor you wanted to book, and complied and went through the process to do it, to accommodate this actor. It's being discussed in other threads, trying to find out of this actually happens in reality.
Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting; please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.
People who have full time job how do u find time for auditions? Specially when its located on the other part of town (LA) . Does anyone have any full time job suggestion that can be good for actors that are looking for auditions?
Hey r/VoiceActing, I'm trying to find a small handful of people to do some short lines and I'm not sure what the best resource/site would be. Just a quick background: Some people and I started an RPG a few years ago right after I moved back from college. We all went from practically strangers to pretty much best friends over the past few years with this one single campaign. It's coming to a close now and I've been planning on doing a short slideshow where each of their characters talks to them about their lives following the end of the game for a couple minutes. I'm pretty good with voices/accents but I wanted it to be more special than that. I'm not looking for professionals who can do awesome voices. Rather just some regular sounding people with decent equipment I can send $5-$10 for doing a real short (like, 60 seconds) line reading. The end product would only be viewed by our small group. Is there a good place to go to with this request? Is $5-$10 too cheap for this kind of ask? Any information that you can provide me would be great! Thanks!
Wondering if anyone has a class/teacher/acting studio they really like in Los Angeles. I moved here recently and have tried one place but didn't love it - it can be a little tough weeding out the bad studios that are just trying to take your $$$. I'm hoping to find somewhere that gives students performance time, has committed actors, and has teachers that really help the students improve. I want to see growth, instead of just going to a class where they coddle you so you never actually know how to get better...that being said I've heard a lot or horror stories about teachers tearing their students down which I don't necessarily want either - looking for a good middle ground. If anybody has a place they like, let me know. Thanks!

Folks, I'm just trying to gauge where I'm at. I was submitting for Voices all day today, and I didn't know when to allow myself to take a break to like...eat? I worked for probably about eight hours, and was absolutely not messing around. I was pretty much nonstop, I took a very short lunch break and felt bad about it haha. But after all of this work--I only recorded 19 submissions. I feel like for as hard as I was working, there should have been more than that. Now I'm still fairly new-ish to this so I know I'll get faster with time, but--what's YOUR schedule like? When do you start, when do you stop? How many auditions do you do per day? Thanks.
Hey everyone! I'm an actor who's just started breaking into film and has done stage work ever since I started acting. But I've noticed a disconnection with my acting lately. It has been really hard for me in the past to let go and become the character I'm playing. Recently I've managed to let go some and it has elevated my acting. Also this is an issue I've had ever since I started acting. When I am memorizing lines, I do it so much it feels like I am just reciting them on cue and its blocking me from really using my imagination and so forth. Now I do research and REALLY prepare for my roles, but I feel a real disconnection. Can anyone give me some good exercises/techniques to really help me?
in shows such as NCIS, Hawaii F0, Blue Bloods, etc. do background actors get credits in the beginning/end screen, or just paid? Thanks.
I have a ton of fans I’ve built up in the nyc market that request me personally for improv etc. to my agents there and I’ve booked a lot of commercials in Nyc - my callback and booking ratios which I’ve measured on excel spreadsheets have only gone up through the years - made the move out of nyc to la and have not gotten called in nearly as much as I’ve liked in past 6 months - even new headshots are great and the two spots I got sent in I got a cb and then avail for - any advice on how to get called in more? In first cb CD told me I’m his new fave and I was in that CB for 40 min just me one on one . - please don’t tell me it’s going to be a long time to get called in more here commercially? Theatrically I am getting called in a ton with producers sessions etc but commercials are how I make my bread and butter - any advice would be great thanks!
Hi there, This is a question mostly for LA-based actors, but I'm happy to hear from anyone! Obviously the breakdowns are flooded with non-union jobs; it's just the reality we're living in at the moment. Have you ever applied to those non-union jobs as a union actor? I suppose there's no rule against it, but my fear would be pissing off casting directors who now think I don't know how to read. Am I being overly paranoid? I've heard it's possible to "flip" a job (if they like you enough for the part they might go SAG signatory), but I'm wondering if anyone on this subreddit has had success doing that. Opinions or insights from those behind the camera are especially welcome. Thank you!
Hi, I am an actor with a little bit of college and highschool theater experience from school, I didn’t do a lot of plays in college because I was focused more on film department work at my school. I did take a lot of acting classes including Shakespearean acting classes. I live in New York now and want to audition for more theater work, but I have more film acting work on my resume. Can I use my school training on my Resume? Am I fucked at ever getting any theater gigs because of my low theater experience on my resume? I have some experience but have more film acting experience. Thanks guys.
Interested in getting into voiceovers but never knew where to start? My name is Terry Daniel. I'm an experienced full time voice actor going on my 30th year in the business! I’m an actor who’s recently made the move to Los Angeles, and will be relocating to North Hollywood soon. With Hollywood studios right there I thought it could be a fun job to work in addition to being convenient location wise. I was wondering if anyone on here has worked as a performer at USH and if they could shed some light on some things? I’ve never been to either Universal location, so I’m a little in the dark as to what kind of opportunities are available for performers there. I know Hollywood Horror Nights is a big one for scare actors, but are there other opportunities for singers, dancers, and other acting opportunities? When do auditions typically take place so I can keep them on my radar? I went online and created a USH performer profile, but the only audition “alert” I’ve gotten was a puppeteer/voice audition for Snowball from Secret life of pets which I wasn’t right for at all lol. They also don’t have a ton of info on their auditions page compared to, say, Disneyauditions.com, so I would appreciate any insight y’all have to offer!
