Howdy, So this is a problem I've been thinking about a lot lately--how do you tell your employer that you need to leave for an audition--Without getting fired? Are you completely transparent about it and let them know you're an actor or do you just tell them you have a doctors appointment? Obviously, this is a temporary job but it is still a source of income... but I'm afraid that I'll start prioritizing the wrong thing if I choose working over an audition. What do y'all do to get around this? I'm pretty anxious when it comes to acting outside of school because I'm still getting my BFA, but "real world" actors...what do you do? What kind of jobs to you have? I've been scouring the temp agencies, thought about substitute teaching, and restaurants that serve brunch..but what other temp jobs should do you recommend? I would appreciate any advice, really. I think this is a question that doesn't get answered as much, maybe because it has a simple answer, but what is that answer.
So I decided a couple months ago that I wanted to start acting again (haven't since high school) mostly as a hobby, I've done some extra work and got cast in a short film for a brand new production studio. I was really excited about the film, but it's been completely disorganized and doesn't feel right to me. The film is unpaid & I'm providing all my own transportation and evidently wardrobe. I asked the director to let me know by November 20th IF I need to supply any wardrobe, as I would be visiting home where there a good and cheap thrift stores, and he said he would. I never heard from him so I assumed I wouldn’t. Call sheets came out over a week later than he promised (it kept being "call sheets come out tomorrow! and then nothing. repeat cycle). I texted him Monday to just confirm that I don’t need to bring any wardrobe and he said “yes you need x for the 13th and x for the 14th”. I said I’m not on the call sheet for the 13th, and he said yes you are, and I sent him screenshots of the call sheet, which I was not on, and he just replied “Check your email.” and sent out an updated call sheet. No apology for the mess up or even to confirm that I'm still available (this is less than 48 hours in advance). So I now have less than 48 hours to find the wardrobe items required, and an extra day to pay for transportation out of the city. I would also have to be rearranging my schedule to make it the 13th. I don't know what to do, it really doesn't feel right to me at all, but like I said I'm new to this so I'm not sure what I should be expecting. However, the extra work I've done (both for big TV Networks & for student films) felt way more professional and respectful of my time than this. Is this normal treatment of actors? Should I say something and stand up for myself? Or just deal with it and never work with the guy again.
Brand new narrator here! But I'm a classically-trained actor from a pretty uppity conservatory program so I guess that's a huge leg-up in terms of artistry. Signed up on Monday for ACX, submitted two auditions yesterday and uploaded two samples, only to have an offer of $70/pfh for a 50k word horror thriller this morning! (Also another offer message from some random asking for 9 hours for 3 at $27/pfh with the promise of more which.... idk. I asked for credentials cause I read researching the author is key and the name was not immediately Google-able.) This is a big project for my first one, but it isn't due until February, so I'm hoping to book a few smaller ones during the process to build my resume/get better. I read it took a while to get a bite, so this seems pretty lucky to me. Just happy!! Thought I'd share.
If anyone has previously been or is currently enrolled in the New York Film Academy Acting For Film program, please share your experience! For example the audition/enrollment process, social aspects of the school environment, how it has helped you learn and grow as an actor, the pace of learning, and things you didn’t/don’t like. Thanks!
Hi everyone, I’m currently a Senior in college and I’m getting a BFA in musical theater. Recently I’ve been looking into voice acting. The training I’m getting allows for us to get voice training as well as plenty of acting experience, but I’ve never done any “real” voice acting/voice over work. Do any of you have any tips and/or things that directors/creators look for (other than experience) when looking for voice actors? And do you have any tips on how someone could get into the community? Thanks for any and all replies!
So I saw a role on actors access for orgy participants for a feature film. Pays $900 and it’s just simulated sex acts and l might not even have to get naked. If I were to get the part, is this something that’s worth putting on my resume? I assume there’s no speaking lines although the description didn’t specify.
Hi everyone, I am a 23 years old guy who is going to move il London next month. I would like to arrive there as prepared as I can so I will try to ask as many question as I can to leave every doubt out and finally sleep more peacefully as some thoughts excite and others terrify me. Some will be related to acting and some points won’t. Please feel free to answer the questions you want to answer, you don’t have to answer all of them. 1) What platform do I use to look for roles 2) I have some background experience (uni projects) but I would like to improve, what daily exercises do you suggest? 3) Should I look for an agency/agent or go by myself? 4) Which work do you suggest me to do, based on what time are usually the auditions? (I was thinking part time barista if I need evenings) 5) Is there a neighbour “famous for acting” in London? I am thinking of Covent Garden but I’m not sure if it’s for shows or auditions as well 6) Should I look for acting courses now or if I start making some money. Some of them are very pricey and I’d want to avoid the “become an actor in 3 weeks” ones as they feel like a waste of money 7) Should I use a weekly underground oyster or just commute whenever I need to attend an audition? 8) Do English casters look only for british people with a perfect british accent? I am Italian but fortunately I have a good accent as I lived in UK for 4 years now, however I completely look Italian. I am proud of it but I doubt my traits will find me as many jobs as say the U.S. 9) Will having quite strong mediterranean traits only give me access to stereotypical gangstar/mafia guy, Italian chef hey mammamia or things like that? For as much as it can help in the beginning I’d strongly prefer more challenging roles even though I know it’s not up to me to decide 10) How do I deal with envy? Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t really envy all the famous actors for making it, but everytime I see someone younger than me or close to my age I always think “Oh look he already made it and you are still here making nothing of yourself, you’ll end up working in a restaurant all your life if you keep going like this”. Hope you get that point. I also love you chefs, no hate towards kitchen work, but I have been a KP for too long now! 11) Do you have goals? Whether they are daily or long term, how do you stick to them and how do you create them? 12) Do you HAVE TO BE overproductive? I do not think of myself as a talented one, unfortunately. Many of my colleagues said I was, never believed them, I always thought they were being nice because they also complimented people which have done the bare minimum in terms of effort. The point is, I really love showing up and giving my all to this art, I feel it is the only job I can wake up to and commute everyday without feeling “Another shitty day at work”; but when I don’t have anything going on in my life I tend to be a full-time procrastinator, not accomplishing anything the whole day. And mind me, I am not talking about days off or some time to rest. Last time I ended up 3 months without touching a script or looking for an audition. 13) How do you fit acting in your everyday life? 14) I really like dubbing and I’d love to participate in a project! Is it completely different from acting? How do you move in that industry? 15) Is London a good option? I know if you are an actor you either go to LA for cinema or NY for theatre. Is London a good starting point though? Does it push more towards theatre or cinema? Thanks for reading so far, I know some questions can be labelled as stupid ones and probably some of them can’t be answered by anyone else by me. But I also am in desperate need of help as I feel I wasted too much time since I started this journey, and probably will need a lot of time just to land in a serious role. Again it does not matter how many answers you gave me, one is perfect and will help me a lot. So, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK!
Maybe the Masterclasses do it but I've never seen a video or interview where an actor tell us how they break down a character? I know a lot them might want to keep their particular process mysterious but I was just wondering if any of the big actors ever revealed how they do it.
Ive heard that backstage is useless to sign up for if u live in LA unless u want to do student films foreverz is this true? Should I just pay for actors access? If I do not have a reel yet, should I even submit? I feel like people without a reel do not even get looked at haha. Maybe just include a self tape as my reel? Lol idk!!!
Hey! I’m on mobile so please excuse formatting issues. I’m primarily a stage and screen actor but I’ve been sent over a voice over script that has been formatted a little differently than I’m used to seeing. I’m unsure of how to approach this one. It looks a little like this: Opening: (In italics) Time Money Honey ———— (Unitalicised) The history of blah blah blah What I’d like to know is; am I supposed to read the italicised bit or is that like a stage direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hey! I’m getting frustrated with how hard it is to get into the room with agents- please, god, tell me how! I am fully confident about myself once I’m in the room- but I just! Can’t! Get! Into! The! Room! HOW on GOD did you get your agent? And how can I get mine?! I’m a nyc actor by the way!
I have gotten interested in voice acting, and one idea I had was to make like a showreel on Soundcloud, for the different kinds of voices I can do. I am not sure this is a good or bad way to do it, but... Then it hit me 'then what?'. I don't think people actively search new users on soundcloud, so I should probably put it up as a showreel somewhere, but... Yeah, I am just entirely dumbfounded on where even to begin. I figured I could check youtube for voice acting auditions, but that was a bit of a bust. Are people on this subreddit checking for voice actors every now and then? And in case it's necessary to add: I don't mean for profit. I am entirely new, and I don't care to do it to make an income, just fun for me to make voices.
I work in the media / film industry but everyone before I tell them what I do...asks if I act or work as an actor. I say I’m not. I never thought anything of it until I was on set with two relatively know actresses and they both said I have the actor look and should at least try if I haven’t already. I did want to be an actor as a kid but fell into production. What does it mean if people instantly think you’re an actor lol
I’ve been acting for a little over a year now. I first started in Seattle and moved to LA about a month ago. Ever since I started, I’ve noticed that when I receive praise, I’m over the moon and for the rest of the day, I’m in the best mood possible. But when a performance of mine doesn’t get a lot of feedback (or any at all) I feel horrible and instead feel like a failure for the rest of the day. There have been times during class where my teacher will tell me the way I played a piece was the best he’s ever seen it. Given that he has been in the business for most of his life and he’s been very successful (an Emmy as the primary example) I thought, wow, if he thinks I did well then I must have. But then another week it seemed like he would have nothing but criticisms about how I play another monologue, and I’d go home beating myself up over it. Just today, I had a voiceover workshop with a really famous video game voice actor teaching it. It seemed like he had something to say for every other person who went and recorded except me. He even praised one student saying he had no notes to give her because he liked her read so much. For the rest of the time I felt bitter and like I was a fraud. I thought I was at least a decent voice actor and even booked a SAG VO gig, but after the workshop today I could not stop thinking about how bad my reading must have sounded. Even afterwards when the class was wrapping up and he told me I had a great read, I assumed he was just saying that. In one of my acting classes, which is taught by a reputable teacher, I seem to get a great response each time we present the assignment for the week. In the other one, it seems like the teacher doesn’t even pay attention to me. He told my scene partner how she strikes him as a natural, and he only seemed to have criticisms for how I played my part. I was thinking about dropping the class that week, mostly due to scheduling and budget, but the teacher’s assistant told me to renew my payment for the rest of the month because he “thought I did really good” which I translated in my head as him just wanting to make me feel better so I renewed the class. In another class I took the intro for, also taught by a reputable teacher in the area, she said I was too acty. I felt so embarrassed in front of the class when she said that because I thought I probably look like an idiot. She said I have the “marketing” down (I’m an asian guy) but that I have to work on not being so showy. Again, this to me felt like she was saying the only reason I’d ever get to be in a production is because I’m fulfilling some sort of diversity quota and not because I’m a good actor. Sorry for the long, ranty, self-deprecating post. I’m just caught constantly between two extremes of either receiving praise and feeling good about myself as an actor, or not receiving it and feeling like a complete failure. I know this isn’t healthy in this industry especially, so how do I fix this? How do I look at myself more objectively and stop beating myself up so much whenever I receive criticism without praise or when someone else seems to “outshine” me?
Hi everyone. Just wanted to throw in here my portfolio website. It's just based on a template but it's up and I will continue to improve it and update it. There will be more clips and stuff. [https://www.siggit.is/](https://www.siggit.is/) I'm an Icelandic actor graduated from the Film School here. I've been sending my site all over Iceland to all the casting agencies and companies and agents. I was also wondering, would it be worth it for me to send a short email to some agencies in the UK? If you could tell me about a good agency for international actors, I'd appreciate it. I don't care if it's a longshot, I just want my info out there to eventually get some international work if possible. Even if it's just in commercials and stuff. I also made a profile on [mandy.com](https://mandy.com) which I'll also continue to improve. Thank you.
this Starbucks at 600 8th Ave. by the Port Authority on 39th & 8th has a 2nd level upstairs that's usually pretty chill and spacious for people to gather. so I'm a 32 year old meisner trained actor who has bounced back and forth between NYC and LA the past few years, finally settling down in NYC to build, and I've been wanting to organize something like this for a while. I have agents, in sag, and also currently interning in development with an indie film producer. I'm looking to basically expand my network, meet more actors, and hopefully talk about career stuff, agents / managers, self-producing stuff, and make new friends. I'm sure we all have some tidbits of knowledge about the business that could help each other get to the next level. I'm also looking for some writing / producing partners, as well as to develop a crew to start shooting stuff, like, for example, a high quality short film as a vehicle to showcase myself and others to submit to festivals. Anybody else around my age interested? comment below or shoot me a PM and we can exchange info prior and hopefully make this worthwhile!
**Synopsis of film:** The short is about a disgraced police officer, JJ, who killed his partner in the field. It shows his attempts to finally get back on top and the turmoil he feels from his alienation from the other officers. **Characters:** **Norm** Norm is still on somewhat friendly with JJ even after all of the unpleasantness and is in charge of processing people to their doom through the station's form of capital punishment. We're looking for an older, kind voice possibly with a little bit of a New England or Boston accent, but nothing too crazy. Not many lines and will be glad to hear from anybody with any versions of the character. **Deputy Derek** Derek was JJ's partner. Now he has the "office" next to JJ. Derek isn't as upset with his partner for killing him as you would expect and tries to help his old partner out in any way he can. We're looking for a nice deep voice. Kind of a slimy cop type delivery and a lot of pent up aggression. Any age range would be good for Derek. If you're interested in auditioning feel free to send me a message on here and we will get back to you as soon as possible. We are working with a small budget and are not able to put a large amount of money into this venture, but I'm sure we will be able to find a good amount that will work for everyone. Thanks for taking a look!
Actors of Reddit! I need some help finding some resources to practise my craft on my own. I want to practise my script analysis and have my own catalogue of monologues/scenes to pick from for class. Can't seem to find any good websites for this, anybody have any ideas?
I hear a lot “age doesn’t matter” to be an actor, but they are mostly talking about for male actor. For the actress, is real age matter? Or it matter only how old they look, not actual age? I’m actually 35 and started acting. I’m ethnic so I look young and ppl usually don’t believe if I’m over 28. (Usually ppl honestly think 25-28 yo). Also if I’m happen to look older, I’m open to have cosmetic procedure to take care of my self. But dose “real age” still going to be problem for me to get role? In 5years I’m going to be 40yo, and I wonder if I happen to get role for younger character, do they consider choosing someone else because of my actual age? (For example if I’m 40, and got role fro 30yo, and my romantic scene partner is 28yo, they think it’s weird and they choose another actor who’s actual age is closer to partner ?) but then if I don’t look 40yo, I can’t even get 40 yo role, like I’m not even able to get 35yo role now cuz my looks doesn’t match to character.
