Is 20 too old to become an actor? by Natsu_Firefox  •  last post Apr 2nd

Im a 20 yr old sophomore in college but I dont think this is my passion. I know most of the actors we see have been acting since they were children. I have no prior acting experience, is it too late to start an acting career?

Best Agency for film actors in SF/Bay? by mixednuts24  •  last post Apr 2nd

I want to try to submit myself to some agency to see what happens. I'm in San Francisco and was tired of doing student films(And many of them didn't even finish post production) and self submitting via sfcasting where you can see very limited film/TV opportunity. Which agency is best for film actors in SF?

Indian/Bengali Male (18) getting into acting in the west? I live in Canada, but am brown (no accent) by elRo233  •  last post Apr 2nd

So since middle school I've kind of been interested in acting. I tried to go to a HS for the performing arts, but I was supposed to do an audition that went horribly wrong. I had like a month or two to prepare for it, and I didn't, because at home I was too embarrassed to act/practice in front of my parents (they didn't support this acting thing, but I guess they wouldn't have minded me practicing in front of them, though they wouldn't care), but I didn't, and I had the opportunity to go to my music teacher and practice with her but I was embarrassed, so I didn't do it. Thing is, I moved from Vancouver to Toronto just that year, and I was in a school with ONLY Indian/Bengali kids and they are not supporting of this stuff at ALL. Anyways, I basically spend the hour before my audition practicing when no one was home and realized that it wasn't gonna happen, but went to the school anyways, hoping people there would be as clueless as I was but OBVIOUSLY I was wrong, and everyone there was white, preppy, and 2 of them were doing the auditions and it was amazing. Now, I am about to graduate HS, go into an Engineering school (as all brown guys are expected to do I guess), but in my heart there is this longing feeling that maybe in some ways I should have done something with acting. I am however really discouraged from doing so because well I'm not your typical greek god actor. I look okay (though, in selfies where the pic is flipped my face looks quite asymmetrical but my friends always go "whooah" when I show it to them so maybe they dont notice it or something), and I'm not very tall (5ft10in I'd say, may be a bit shorter). Given all this, how can I possibly get into acting in Canada or USA? I've read a lot and watched a bunch of videos, and it seems that directors/recruiters DON'T want anything to do with brown actors? Any insight would be helpful

Scene partner won’t make eye contact by TheCityThatCriedWolf  •  last post Apr 2nd

Hey, so I’ve just started rehearsals for a great play with a pretty uniformly great cast. However one of my fellow actors won’t make eye contact when we’re doing scenes together but instead will look about six inches to the side of my face. I've only encountered this a couple times with other people throughout my fifteen years of acting but thankfully it's fairly rare. Still, I'm always bewildered by it. Do these people think they're fooling anyone? Do they realize how weird and unnatural it looks? Has anyone had issues with this either with yourself or other scene partners? It's just such a weird thing and the director hasn't said anything and I don't want to be an asshole and point it out. Just curious for another perspective.

Ways to improve diction as an actor? by Juansxn  •  last post Apr 2nd

I've always struggled with my diction due to a speech impediment I had when I was younger. Due to my growing love for theatre and performance, for the past few months I've been improving it slowly by counting 1-180 fairy often and pronouncing it the best I can. I also do small things such as say words the best I can in normal speech and correcting myself when I say words incorrectly. This has helped me to some degree but I'm always looking for other ways that could be more effective to help me improve my diction in my lines.

Newby by Kellie VonBank  •  last post Apr 1st

Good day/evening! I wanted to pop in and introduce myself. My name is Kellie VonBank and I am finally taking a couple steps towards fulfilling life long interests. I'm 41 years old and haven't done anything in front of a camera for production since 1995. Any tips, suggestions, or advice on how to get my foot in a door, getting started? I have my first monologue reading on Saturday April 7th, 2018. I've selected a snippet from Magnolia, character of Linda Partridge played by Julianne Moore, (Linda and Earl's Lawyer scene). I look forward to meeting you!

NY Agencies List by Malvolio2222  •  last post Apr 1st

Is there a list floating about for NY agencies? I know there's one for LA that has them sorted into "tiers". I just moved to NY from LA, and a list like that would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Stanislavsky Vs. All-Other Styles by ZaxMarquee  •  last post Apr 1st

Recently I read an article about the differentiation between the styles of acting and how the deviation from Stanislavsky’s original is all it is (Hagen, Adler, Meisner). In your opinion, what do you see as the differences between the styles? As a new actor to LA, I’ve had a rough time figuring out which to pursue, so any advice would be appreciated!

I want to be an actor, but at the same time, I don't want to be famous. by srk9000  •  last post Apr 1st

This is one of the things I wanted to talk about. I remember as a kid, every time I watch a film, I thought to myself, "Wow, I want to be an actor in the future". I had dreams of going to Hollywood and become a famous actor. Now, at the age of 21, I began to take acting classes and films seriously and that dream of being a Hollywood actor has faded away. I don't want to be recognized everywhere, I don't want the paparazzi sneaking around taking photos of me everywhere, I don't want to be in films with big budgets, I don't want to be in films that are doomed to fail, I don't want to travel to countries to act (I have a fear of flying and I hate long traveling), I don't want to be surrounded by other actors/celebrities with huge egos (Not all actors/celebrities have huge egos, I know) and I don't want my privacy destroyed. I just want to be in films that are minimal like Independent films and I want to be surrounded by passionate people with dreams and purpose. For example, I want to be in films like Good Will Hunting, The Outsiders, The Breakfast Club, La La Land, etc because I can see myself in those kind of films, not films that are too Hollywoodish. Also, I wish there are more independent and original films, including Drama which is my favorite genre. To all the actors on Reddit, do you feel the same way? Sorry for the wall of text.

Feeling stupid/silly by Blackturtleneckgirl  •  last post Apr 1st

when i watch monologues or theatre i feel incredibly inspired and almost in awe of many actors. But when I think about doing it myself I feel like it's just silly. This is holding me back incredibly from acting, i've recently began. To add, I've been in a creative rut for years now, I'm only 25 and want to move forward. But i'm so afraid to let go. To the point where if I was in a class or decided to try drama school I'm afraid I'd just hold back and feel so deeply insecure or silly or like the worst actor ever. Has anyone started off with similar feelings regarding acting?

Role under 18 by Blazerdog1  •  last post Apr 1st

When two actors in a movie/show have a love interest but one of the actors are over 18 and you want to audition for the other love interest role but you are under 18. Is it still possible to get the role? Sorry if this didn't make sense, it's hard to explain.

Best scene study and audition classes in Los Angeles? by ZaxMarquee  •  last post Apr 1st

I previously took a meisner intensive with Michelle Danner, and a month of Ivanna Chubbucks class. My agent is really pushing for me to take an audition and scene study class, so do my fellow actors in LA have any solid recommendations for studios that are NOT money suckers hahaha?

Questions about getting into acting by Livelordx_lol  •  last post Mar 31st

Hello everyone, A buddy of mine is an actor who gets gigs here and there in the surrounding areas of where I live. He stated for me to get started into acting I needed headshots and agents, but first the headshots. So I've completed the headshots part, I've got a solid 10 photos to start with, and including a comp card. I've also reached out to a couple agents that my buddy uses and recommended to me via email and submitted my headshots but I haven't gotten a return email or phone call. Using the tools on the sidebar, I've created an account with ActorsAccess and Backstage. Playing around with those websites I see that I can submit my application to get roles but most require a demo reel or a resume. I don't have any acting experience aside from what I did in high school. What else am I missing that I can do or SHOULD do to keep going?

What are the best part-time jobs for actors? by KryptoniteByNight  •  last post Mar 31st

I'm interested in knowing if most professional actors here work part-time jobs outside of acting? If you're full-time, how long did it take to get there? If you're part-time, what do you guys do outside of acting?

Acting Classes in Los Angeles by ZaxMarquee  •  last post Mar 31st

Howdy guys, I’ve recently moved to LA to pursue acting after a stint in private equity and I’m at a crossroads. When I first got to LA I took classes at Michelle Danner studios and then at Ivana Chubbuck. While they were okay, these classes seemed to me like money suckers, only attracting many international students who just wanted to get a student visa out of the program. Additionally, a problem with both these classes was that I didn’t get to perform every class, which is felt was a ripoff. Do my fellow actors in LA have any good recommendations as to some good class experiences you’ve had?
