I don’t really see a lot of information here about his classes or his podcasts. Any of you guys listen to his podcast or read his book or been to one of his classes? Thoughts?
I want to know because I did a similar thread to this one in the r/theatre reddit. Let me know below.....oh, and let me know how old you were when the thing I describe above made you want to be an actor, and for what reason? Also, for the theater stuff or movie stuff or tv show or whatever, it does not have to be professional. It can be community/school/regional/whatever.
I wanted to feel empowered and ask if this ever happened to you guys. I finished a workshop pn respect on set that union members must adhere to and how they should react if they feel the set they are on involves harassment or safety issues. . I was surprised that so many non union actors I knew who were not at the workshop, put up with abusive situations becaise they believe this is how the industry is...
Hey guys, I posted awhile ago about overseas, but what if its just a different area like van and toronto. How did you guys get your rep in Van or vice-versa?
Due to some various factors (time conflicts, etc) the past couple roles have been fairly small ("Man 5", "Doctor"), etc. Should I still put them on my resume? On one hand, I want to show I've been consistently working. On the other, I don't want people to think I'm a weak actor. Any advice?
Hey, I recently did a commercial audition (non union, I’m SAG E) and it’s been well over two months since I received payment. The actors I worked with haven’t been paid either and it seems like we have been cut from the final ad (they’re still testing I think) The buyout was 1500 and the session fee was $500 + %10. If they cut you out the final product, can they skimp on paying the session fee? Should I ask my manager what’s up ?
Hello my beautiful actor friends! I'm looking to do an acting intensive in late summer / early fall in LA, any you recommend? I need to brush up as i've started pursuing acting again. (took a few years off and worked more behind the scenes) I did an intensive at Lee Strasbergs in NY for a few months a few years ago and it was honestly one of the best experiences I've ever had in my life - not just acting wise, but my life. I was thinking of doing an intensive at the LA Lee Strasbergs this time. But I'm open to suggestions on workshops and intensives in the LA area that helped you guys improve your technique and on camera skills, any suggestions?
Hey guys! I’m feeling inspired today and wanted to share. I’m 18 years old and I’m preparing to go back to London for a drama school recall, this will be my second trip to London in a month. It’s a 14 hour flight there, and 14 hours back. On my down time after coming back from my first trip I’ve been cast as Claudio in Much Ado and Romeo in R&J. I’m tired and am constantly doing theatre, but no part of me wants to slow down. I was given instruction by one of my trusted teachers who was helping me with my classical piece to look up every single word in my piece in the lexicon, even the ones I thought I knew. So, there I was, looking up every single word, including words like “This” or “From”. And I realized truly how much I love what I do. I was sitting there doing something that sounds so tedious and might feel unnecessary to some and I was happy. I’m happy to be tired every day because I spend all day in and out of classes, rehearsals and studying my craft. My issues with anything else I’ve been interested in was that I enjoyed the final product, but not the process. Acting is one of the few things where the process is as fulfilling as the final product to me. I’m sharing this to keep myself motivated and to encourage everyone else here to remember how lucky we are to be actors. Remember even when we fail that we are lucky to fail as actors, some never even take the chance to fail, and when we do, we can keep working until we succeed. I love this crazy thing that we do. Thanks for listening, friends! I just wanted to share something I had been thinking about with a community that might appreciate it. :)
The title says it. Just curious as to why some young blokes just catapult into the A list with back to back studio movies seemingly out of nowhere. For example, Dylan minitree, Dylan O’Brien, Tom holland, Tye Sheridan etc...all became crazy huge between ages of 15-20 years old and the things they did leading up to those roles weren’t anything huge. Mostly, short films/independent films like the majority of hopeful actors are doing everyday in LA. I know there’s no one answer but as an analytical thinker it’s hard to turn my questions off sometimes. Ha. I mean there are so many talented LA actors that are young, beautiful etc..and just wondering if these examples just have something that separates them even further from the pack or is it just right place right time/knowing someone or just crazy luck? I had a working LA friend tell me that what separates those that “make it” from others is confidence but I’m not sure I buy that entirely. Coming from a part time actor and full time working professional, the thought of giving everything up to join the audition roulette in LA is still such a mystery to me. One that I’m scared of and drawn to. I just wish there was something to hang your hat on. Like, if I do XYZ then I know that I can get these parts and be a working actor. But the stats are ridiculous for how few actually work in this town. Hard decisions.
https://youtu.be/Qk41j5ftSgY Discovered this today, I had never heard of it. He has a trick for his American accent (starts at around :40) where he just says a sentence that contains all the sounds different from his natural Aussie accent. By the end of the sentence he'll be ready for the take. Being an American, an aspiring actor, and a lover of accents, I would love to hear if you guys have any tricks like this or have ever used this exact trick for a different accent. Have you ever heard of this trick? Are there sentences that would help with a Posh English, Cockny or Irish accent?
Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this.
Hoping to move to LA in a few months, and I'm trying to figure out if I could make it work by working as a non-union extra while taking classes on the side. I did extra work in LA for a few weeks a couple years ago, but I'm pretty sure wages have gone up since then. It looks like current minimum wage is $12/hr so that's 8 hours at $12/hr = $96 plus 4 hours at $18/hr, so total a day would be $168 for the day. But that's before taxes.... Also minimum wage is going up to $13.25 on July 1st, which would put the 12 hour day total at $185.50 before taxes. Just wondering if anyone happens to know how much gets taken out for taxes. Thanks! And I realize not all days are 12 hours days, but it seems like it isn't that uncommon.
SF Bay Actors, what kind or type of acting or marketing classes are most helpful in your career as on-camera talent the Northern California? Any bay area actors out there?
Looking for some feedback if you all would be so kind. I know this is too long for a reel, but I'm wondering what to cut, or how to re-order the clips. This is obviously still very raw and needs some editing, but being that I'm doing that myself (not my strong suit) I thought I'd get some feedback before I do too much tweaking. Again, any and all constructive feedback welcome. https://vimeo.com/265290733 Password: squeezebox
Hi everyone. I'm thinking of learning acting and picking it up. However, my teeth are way less than perfect. Bulging front teeth, and teeth that overlap each other. Do i need braces treatment in order to be more qualified as an actor?
I wonder if anyone has ever gotten headshots done there? Who was the photographer and how long did it take for you to get photos? I finally had some done on March 31st and and the photographer was Gary Bastian. He said it would be two weeks before I hear back and he is taking too long to respond to emails and I can't stop worrying about being ripped off. I contacted Tristian at Vision8studio and he gave everyone the email address for Gary to contact him about for photos. I just sent Tristian an email again but this time about my concerns about this photographer he has who he lets come to his studio from time to time to take headshots to help beginning actors to get into the business. I am thinking about sending others emails too who have also had headshots done there to see if they are having the same problem as me. I won't request a refund yet from paypal because you have 180 days from the day you paid to file a dispute. I wouldn't be so anxious if Gary wasn't taking too long to respond and he said he had been at work and he would respond more with detail after work. He never did. This was 8 at night when he responded claiming he was at work so I figured he must work late and it's been two days and no further reply from him so that makes me real worried. I sent him another email yesterday saying I was still waiting for more details and no response. Lack of communication makes me anxious because I don't know if I am going to be getting my photos so that is why I am asking this. Now I am already thinking about trying to get my money back if I don't get my photos.
Hi there! I've been a musical theater actress for almost 13 years now. I took a 2 year break because I resigned to the idea that I am one in a million and would never be successful. Well. I auditioned for a principle role in a feature film... and booked it. The man playing opposite me is a seasoned theater veteran, he says if I don't fuck up I'll succeed. What the fuck do I do? My first film role was a MAJOR character in a feature film. We wrap this weekend, I have no representation or other projects lined up. What do I need to do to best utilize this momentum? The director told me about his next film and hinted that he wants me to audition, the aforementioned actor told me about touring for panels?? I'm really anxious and excited. I feel like I'm on the cusp of success, but I have no idea how to keep moving forward. Help.
Posted yesterday but reposting in hopes of someone else seeing and knowing the answer lol. “Signed” with an agency on Thursday, but still haven’t heard anything from the agent yet. Didn’t sign a contract or anything and all she told me was that she would email me all the necessary information (how to reformat resume, new headshot template, adding agency to Actors Access and other sites, etc.) later that night. However, like I mentioned, I still have yet to hear from her. Just wondering how long the process of signing with an agent would usually take? A friend who is signed with this agency said they would bring me in again to sign the contracts once they draw it up, but I have anxiety so a bunch of worse case scenarios are running through my mind as to why they haven’t contacted me yet. “Maybe they don’t want me anymore!” “Maybe they’re so busy that they forgot about me!” “Maybe I was supposed to stay longer to talk to the agent more!” And the list goes on and on...
Hi guys, for those who have reps either talent or agent-wise overseas, how did that happen and how do you do it? I'm trying to understand if I would apply if I'm a non-local and if things go well, i book a flight for an interview or if it would just be a phone interview? it wouldn't make sense to book the flight first since agents/managers take time to respond. can someone give me a few pointers on how this works?
