I’m new to LA and will be signing up for background work this upcoming week. I have a background in comedy and mostly dry humor, but this was from live shows and self written/group produced material. I do not have a reel yet. I know 99% of the people here are extraordinarily attractive, mostly Caucasian and the few who aren’t are still extremely good looking. I’m late 20s, average not skinny weight, I am a minority of Hispanic descent, have a strong jawline and prominent cheekbones but am aware my look would at best be a character actress. I have been told I could look many different ethnicities from Hispanic, Mediterranean, Persian, and general ethnic not blond types. Is there any one who has good advice on how to start this process knowing the realities of not fitting in the stereotype? I’m more than willing to PM a self shot just didn’t want to put a non headshot up on here.
So, I live in Houston, Texas. While Houston does have a very large theater scene the film/tv industry is almost non-existent here. The most I can find are auditions for short films, student films that typically don't fit my character. I should add that I am a black woman. There are more opportunities in cities like Dallas and Austin (which aren't too far, but too if the role isn't paying considering i work full time and am a student). My question is, would singing with an agency (which is my goal for the year, to sign with one of the two SAG approved) actually give me more opportunity if there isn't much where I live? Example, would they submit video auditions of me to nationwide castings? Or do they just work based on what comes up near me and fits my description? I plan on trying to get signed regardless, I just want to have realistic expectations going in. **TLDR;** Black female actress in Houston Texas, is there more opportunity signing with an agency?

i've been taking classes for a while, etc. etc., but I can't even find auditions. being non union, i never get seen for theater stuff. whenever i actually GET an audition from self submitting for unpaid student film stuff, there's always a conflict from work, and the few times I've been cast in student film work, I either don't get the footage or the footage is garbage or the writing is garbage or for whatever reason it ends up being a huge waste of time. whenever i try to create something myself its impossible to get other people on board, because almost every actor I know is an asshole that only wants things handed to them, or everybody's schedule conflicts, or people just stick their nose up at me. actors on my level even! i dont get it man. i feel like i'm a "good" actor. i have training. but how the fuck am I even supposed to get representation if I can barely find auditions on my own? and I havent even gotten to paid work yet! this is just ridiculous, this doesnt even feel pursuable! it all just seems like luck is the only thing that matters. i'm tired of feeling like everything i do for acting is a giant waste of time. yes i love the craft, but honestly, i don't know what to do anymore. i'm tired of wasting money on classes and not finding auditions, not being able to find rep, like this is bullshit man.
After reading some posts here the general consensus seems to be NOT to move to LA just for pilot season and expect success because agents will be busy and what not. However I am moving anyways to move in with filmmaking buddies so I might as well try while I'm there. I need to get new headshots for sure, but is there any chance at all for success besides sheer luck?
I'm looking to put together a basic self-tape reel to at least have something to show off my skills, but am looking for material. What's the best resource(s) for finding 1-3 minute monologues? My background: male, late 20's/early 30's. I already have some decent gear (camera/lighting/sound) and editing software. Thank...
I've been contemplating becoming an actress for years but have never really dived in because I live in Arizona and there's not a whole lot of opportunities but this is the year I stop making excuses and give it my all. I've considered acting classes from the community college but I can't afford to be a full-time student. Also where's a good reputable source for auditions in the Phoenix area? All I've managed to find were scam sites.
Yes I pay the yearly $68 on showfax and I remember being a poor actress living off ramen not being able to afford audition scenes on showfax. So if anyone needs me to email them a specific scene message me and I can help out! Just trying to give back to the acting community!!!
So I’m a [f/20] I’m from LA originally and I’m an actress. Back when I was 17/18 I had good agents that sadly stopped being an agent. I was at AKA talent agency... but my agent quit and became a yoga instructor and then I got signed with Pantheon but my agent quit because she booked a series regular on This is Us (Chrissy Metz) I did a few commercials and I did producers/director sessions for a mtv and Disney pilot and etc. LOTS of training from great acting coaches. Since losing my agents that I had great connections with I had to move to another state because I couldn’t afford to live in LA it’s been 2 years but I saved up and I’m moving back to LA this April. It’s like I’m starting all over again and I need your guys help. I want to be 100% prepared when I get back to LA. I have new headshots that are great, An updated resume, I have no good demo reel footage at all because I look 100% completely different from when I was 17 and I’ve grown as a better actor.... should I submit to an agent with a self tape audition? And if so should I do a short scene or monologue? Also should I submit to agencies via email or just hard copies? I know, I know an industry referral is best but I don’t have anyone to refer me since I’m out of the loop for a few years. I really need to get back out there again with good representation. Any advice on how to submit to agents in 2018 would be great! Thanks you guys!!!
So i recently signed up to an extra's agency - not thinking much about it. I received an availability check today for a list of dates from early March to late May - for Game of Thrones. I really want to do it, i feel like it would be an amazing experience. It's paid work, really not the best wage considering its a 12hr day, but it's something. The biggest problem is the distance. I'm still in school, and the shooting takes place roughly 350km from home. Catching a bus with a train is probably around a 4-5hr trip one way, and im guessing i would need to stay the night on some dates. It's a lot of costs, and im guessing from the pay i would be breaking even. My only question is, is it all worth it? can i gain anything (experience, improvement-wise) from work as an extra? Don't get me wrong, i'm ready to sacrifice a lot for work as an actor, but is this really what i'm chasing? Thanks, ps: the availability check needs to be submitted by tomorrow morning.
Hi there, I'm working on defining my branding/type before getting new headshots and would love if you could complete this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/58JDMT9 If anyone else wants to do this, I'd be happy to complete your survey as well! Thanks, Loralee
Hi everyone! I’m not personally an actor, but my boyfriend is. He’s been taking Meisner classes for almost a year now. He seems really into it. He loves going to class and he’s even read all of Sanford Meisner on Acting (which is the first time I think I’ve ever seen him finish a book!) But he’s getting tired of having to think of New difficult activities every week. Lately he’s felt uninspired and wanting to ditch more classes. He doesn’t have a problem creating the story to make them important to him or any of that. He just has trouble coming up with a different task every week. More and more he’s talking about stopping all together. I try to keep him motivated but every week my points are making less of an impact. I, personally, have seen improvement in his acting since he started. But I’m just his girlfriend so I don’t have the professional credibility to support me when I say that. I guess it’s hard to believe when you’re putting in all this time and effort and still not getting many parts. So my question is: is learning this technique really worth it?
I have no formal training other than a sketchy school a few years ago. I know that schools arent the gatekeeper to acting career but can be helpful. For those who studied here, what are your thoughts about it? Training quality, skills developed and if you feel you became a better actor? This year they introduced a tuition so If I ever get in, I dont know if its worth shelling out 7 K since I already shelled out monry a few years baxk for acting school. Im pretty much looking for a discussion about the actors program at CFC
which is it the study plan of the actors studio school in ny please? I'll never go to study in it but maybe I can read the books who they give to the students and other materials. can you you write me their study plan please? so I can try to organise myself to study as much as possible. thx
Hey there! I'm a model looking to transition into acting. I know one of the first steps is getting a good headshot. Luckily, I have plenty of high quality photos, I just don't know if any will work as an actor's headshot. Here's the one I've been using. Feedback would be very appreciated. Also if you have a "type" that comes to mind when you see me, please share. https://ink361.com/app/users/ig-6998436746/modelingmidwest/photos/1702619427051460477_6998436746
Hi guys, I'm doing an audition for an Audible studios radio drama and as an actor who has only auditioned for exclusively film, TV, and theatre, I'm not too sure how to go about this audition. I haven't got a script yet but am I expected to memorize some sides? Will I be auditioning in front of a radio mic? What kind of things is a radio casting director looking for? I'm excited as this is my first audition of the year (finally) but I'm also a little confused... any help would be amazing!
if so, would you be willing to share your source?
1. My acting coach told me that theatrically talent agencies and managers won’t even consider me if I don’t have an LA commercial talent agent and have booked commercials. 2. I have been told starting off in a smaller market will increase my chances of success in LA (6 years in SF) but after almost a year submitting to agents and managers in LA I haven’t even gotten a thank you for applying. I submit to nearly all every 3-6 months depending on the agency or management company resubmission policies. 3. Should I follow the agencies that have no drop off polices or risk going in and dropping my material there? 4. Is mail in submissions, or email submissions better? 5. If I have headshots, resume, letters of recommendation from industry professionals and a reel why won’t anyone sign me? 6. On imdbpro I see actors signed with big agencies but are in the 300,000s to the 2,000,000s some with one credit to their name. I’m in 80,000s is this normal?
