Why is inauthentic acting sometimes really effective? by nevernotmad  •  last post Aug 19th

Non-actor here. How to explain? There is a lot of bad acting and hokiness on Buffy the Vampire Slayer for example; but it works. I’m still buying into the premise of demons and a teenage girl who fights them with her best pals. Is the campy vibe a choice made by the director? The actors? The script-writers? Is there a big meeting?

Lots of voice TALENT, but where do I find voice ACTORS? by resetplz  •  last post Aug 19th

Did some research this morning looking for a voice actor. No surprise that most gigs are either selling something or announcing something; not too much acting demos. Where might I find voice ACTORS? Another question: One VO person I found was listed as union but suggested that this isn't ironclad and that they can still do non-union work "under certain conditions". Is this true? I'm self-funding so I've had to avoid union talent. \- - - - **UPDATE** with more details: This is an unusual project because it's neither film/TV/radio nor corporate/industrial. It might best be described as a series of "short stories"—effectively monologues. I guess the closest relative would be audiobook narration. There are several "mini-scripts" underway, generally between 1-4 pages of dialog, that call for different voices. I've found a couple of promising ones so far but one or two are proving more difficult (and I'll be needing others in the weeks ahead). \[removed talent-specific info\]

I'm looking by TotallynotReimu96  •  last post Aug 19th

I am looking to audition some voice actors for short crime videos. The style of the video will be similar to FBI Files/48 Hours. The accents can be either British or American (native). I'm looking for a normal pitched voice (I don't want a voice you can't sustain, so preferably your own pitch). It's a YouTube channel based on Crime Cases and Serial Killers (almost 500.000 subscribers now) and the scripts are between 800 and 1200 words long, most of the time. The work should be delivered in 48 hours from the moment you receive the script and the payment method will be PayPal. I am willing to pay $40 for 1000 words script (I know it's less than you expected, but I just got monetized this month and I can't afford to pay more) This will be a commitment of at least 30 episodes. If anyone is interested, please pick a short passage from Wikipedia/ Murderpedia serial killer case of your choice and show it to me (maximum 200 words). I will pick fluency over pitch and pronunciation over sound quality (sound quality can be improved with money). It can be male or female. The commercial rights belong to me.

Where oh where can we post about voice acting courses? by SARAAAAAH777  •  last post Aug 19th

Hellooooo I am a voice actor and teacher and am stating up a foundation voice acting course specifically for folks wanting to do indie audio fiction / audio drama. I have had a good browse and I am stumped! Where can I pop the links to the course without admins getting cross with me?

How do people get jobs as voice actors on TV adverts/TV shows? by nikolasmaduro  •  last post Aug 19th

I'm wondering. I don't know if any of you know David Wartnaby but he's a pretty good English V/A artist that does many things on CNN International, Sky, Crime and Investigation UK. Is it a hard marketplace to crack into? I've heard that only 2% of voice artists make it professionally

Looking to try out acting, anyone know of any groups doing acting classes over Zoom? by lemursrcool  •  last post Aug 18th

I work a full-time office job and went to film school, and man, I miss being on sets. I'm curious if there are any classes out there or just groups of actors looking to practice over Zoom. I'd love to get involved and test the waters.

A Question on Professionalism and Script Typos by TheGentlemanK  •  last post Aug 18th

I’ve recently been foisted into a position in my company where I am reviewing a lot of voice work, and I’ve noticed a pattern with the voice overs. The voice actors, whom are all native English speakers (or very good at faking it) will read *exactly* what it says on the paper. Even if there are egregious grammar issues or typos (our script writers are not native speakers). Yesterday I listened to three takes of the line “*We are winner*” said without an ounce of humour. Obviously, it’s not a voice actor’s responsibility to proofread their scripts. But when I’ve done my own voice work I usually did an extra take correcting any typos I found and annotated my submission. So while the bulk of my frustration is at my colleagues once again tossing out whatever without proofreading or QA. I admit I’m a bit frustrated with our voice actors as well, I feel like they should know better than to record three separate takes of obvious typos and poor grammar. But then I figured it would make a good point of discussion for here. Mostly I’m venting because I had to fight with my boss to get them to pay to redo these lines. As professionals and semi-professionals what do you do when you encounter these errors in your scripts? Do you fix them in your recordings?

My very first, amateur demo reel. by cosmoskiwi  •  last post Aug 18th

Hello, I am an aspiring voice actor, attempting to get myself out there. I am hoping to find feedback on my very first demo reel, which my girlfriend and I created using free content online. We edited it together ourselves. I have detected a couple of moments where I may have, for a moment, come closer to the mic, therefore making it unintentionally louder. I am working on more demo reels, so I can display my character and narration voices as well but would really love feedback from this awesome community on this one. Many thanks in advance. Would doing "sexy" photoshoots ruin my future acting career? by bigdreameractress  •  last post Aug 18th

Hi everyone, I'm an 18 year old female who has just started working as a freelance model and actress, but I have big aspirations of making it into Hollywood (I dream big, I know.) I would be confident and agree to do sexy scenes in acting, but I get very reluctant when asked to do photoshoots that are too sexy and revealing for me as I'm afraid that doing so will lower my chances of getting booked for acting projects. Which is weird considering Hollywood makes a lot of their money off of sex and sexy actors. To be more specific, I was recently just offered to do a classy hotel bathroom photoshoot. Some of the more revealing shots like wearing lingerie with a robe and sitting in a bathtub with lots of soap make me feel reluctant to do them, even though I already accepted the offer. I would love to do all the shots if I wasn't so paranoid about this possibly causing me to not get acting roles. I would greatly appreciate it if you tell me whether it's just me being paranoid or not.

"I built an App so people can audition for my movie during quarantine..." by rynoryder11  •  last post Aug 18th

I am an independent filmmaker in Los Angeles who is currently in production on a feature film, "The Ant Hill." I have been working on designing a casting app for the past couple of years, and when quarantine happened, I figured this was the right time to develop it and put it into action. I give you, "[AuditionMe.LA](https://AuditionMe.LA)", a FREE app available for your iPhone! There are currently two roles available for you to audition for. This is not like any other auditioning or casting app out there. Record yourself from your phone and minutes later, receive an edited video of your self-tape, cut together with the other actors already in the scene. You can do it as many times as you like and pick your best one! Go to "[AuditionMe.La](https://AuditionMe.La)" and follow the link to download for free on iOS. If you have any questions about the platform, or any other of my endeavors as a filmmaker and entreprenuer, you can visit my YouTube channel where I have been documenting my journey over the last two and a half years. [https://www.youtube.com/rynoryder](https://www.youtube.com/rynoryder) I wish you all the best and I want to remind you all that there has never been a greater time to be a creative. All of the opportunities are right in front of you...it just takes a little courage to reach for the things we truly want in life, and I hope to be an insipration for others to stand up and make that reach with me. Sincerely, Ryan McCoy

Anyone Looking for an Online Teen Actor? by abc12321cda  •  last post Aug 18th

So over this time of a worldwide pandemic, I have realized that I quite enjoy acting, when it isn’t for an audience I can see. So if anyone needs, I will act scenes and send in videos of myself acting, however my real name will not be known, I will not be doing any sort of horror or anything that includes any time of nudity, and I will only do minimal swears. I would prefer to work on dystopian type movies but am willing to experiment with other types as well. I have previous acting experience in several school plays and received B+ to A’s in all of them. I am slightly scared to see if anyone responds, I’m a natural introvert so don’t try to make me a loud main character, and I will absolutely not meet anyone in person.

In need of some proper advice by iovoko  •  last post Aug 18th

I have wanted to be an actor for three years, and have been taking classes/lessons for the past 1.5 years. In this time, I have come to consider myself decent at acting. Today, I watched a video of myself doing two monologues and wanted to cry, because of how terrible I was. I’m not overly harsh on myself and not exaggerating the fact that I was *bad*. I’m continuing to take a next level class starting in January, but I have nothing until then and have taken a huge blow to my confidence. How do I deal with this? How do I make myself feel better?

What equipment to pair with the MXL990 Condenser? by SallyHardesty5  •  last post Aug 17th

Hey all! I'm a voice actor who is *extremely* *new* to this space, and I am very excited to be here! You all seem awesome, informative, and very helpful - so I think you may be able to give me a bit of equipment advice. I'm a new kid at technical stuff, so I need help. \---------------------- I recently invested in an **MXL990 Condenser Microphone**, which I'm already super into - but I have a feeling the equipment I'm using with it could be better. The interface I have to connect that to my computer is an **M-Audio Fast Track Pro** (which does have Phantom Power capabilities). I also have some less-than-$20 USD cables by which I attach the mic to the interface, and some usb cables by which I attach the interface to my computer. What I wanted to know from you is: *is some better equipment I could invest in to pair with the MXL990, a better interface specifically, that could help me getting better use out of the mic overall - i.e., a better sound?* But also: *is this combination of mic and interface perfectly fine, and maybe I should stop worrying about it?* Let me know what you think! Thank you so, SO MUCH for your help!

Ameture voice actor - voice review request by AnEccentricScientist  •  last post Aug 17th

Hi My name is Ammar. Im just exploring things and voice acting seems quite interesting. Im looking to make a career in it if my voice is any good. Bachelor's Degree Decision by eaglesnestmuddyworm  •  last post Aug 17th

I very often question my decisions when it comes to going to school, because I could save *so much money* if I hop right into the industry or save money to move into an acting hub. HOWEVER, I recently got confirmation from my eternally fried brain and a local community theatre group that I should continue my education in theatre arts, so I'm sharing this short story in case anyone needs to find motivation in these trying times for actors. I applied for a small acting scholarship with my local community theatre a while ago, and I got it along with one other person. It's only $1,000 but that's still awesome to receive after an audition (monologue and solo music piece) and interview you swear you failed, and right out of high school. I've also decided that furthering my education would benefit me personally, because although I know having a BFA in Musical Theatre isn't really a standout statement on a resume, I realized that I want to further my skill before I throw myself into the industry guns a-blazin'. Just thought I'd share a nice story to lift a few moods, including my own.

How’s the student film scene at UGA/GT? What other colleges outside NYC/LA have a strong community of indie filmmaking? by boogqlzh  •  last post Aug 17th

Ignoring the pandemic, do colleges in Georgia have a strong presence for student films? Or even a large system for theater? Basically the motive behind the question is, is it a place budding with opportunities for a novice actor in college to get his feet wet and build a reel. And if not Georgia, what other lesser known schools are great in this department.
