So I’m (21F) a senior in university about to get my degree is history. However, my dream has been to become an actress ever since I was 13. But I never had the confidence to put myself out there and audition for anything in high school or college. Right now I still don’t really have the confidence to tell anyone about my dream face to face but I’m at a point in my life where I feel like this is my last chance to see if it can work in this industry and if I don’t at least try I might regret it. The instability of an acting career and my inexperience also scares me. I guess my question to y’all would be should I even pursue acting, if so where do I even start since I don’t have any experience or training and what do you guys do as “survival” jobs.
Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting; please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.
For many of us, this career can play a pretty significant role on our mental health. From constant rejection, to comparison, to thinking we're "not good" or "not going to make it", working survival jobs we don't care about, or working real jobs that don't allow us to audition--many of us struggle with mental health/time management/or a lack of self care. What has your experience been? What do you do to try to work through these issues? Have you taken any workshops/read books/done worksheets that have helped with this?--Please share? Mental Health is an important topic, especially in this community where I see so many miserable actors--even successfull ones. Let's talk about it!
Hello all, I returned to acting March 1 2019... I had studied Dramatic Arts and was a Star Improv League player back in the mid 80’s with a dream back then of becoming a full time actor, but another career presented itself and have had a successful career of over 30 years from which I am planning on retiring from in the next few years. Over the past 9-10 years, I have come across several people in the “business” that said I need to put myself out there for background acting as I have a look that would be in demand. I thanked them politely but in my head thought I was too old to return to acting. Last February, a colleague (who does some background acting once in a while) insisted I submit myself to Casting agents as I definitely have a look that would be in demand with the salt & pepper hair, uniforms, distinguished older, yet young looking executive / position of authority “look/type”. I was going to ignore it again but SHE INSISTED and wouldn’t stop until I did submit myself. One night, I was watching the late evening news when she texted me and asked: ‘So? Who did you submit to?” I started to laugh and replied that I was still considering it. She said “NO! You are submitting yourself TONIGHT... I’m not going to stop texting you until you DO!” So, with her guidance, I found a few Casting agents I could submit myself to... so “off went my profile photos’. TIME: 10:54pm Imagine my shock and surprise to wake up the next morning at 08:15 and find an email in my inbox saying: “Thank You for submitting yourself. I am BOOKING YOU in a background role of Commander on HANDMAID’S TALE. Filming all day March 1, 2019. Please confirm.” OMG Did THAT just happen? Well, that was the beginning of my return to my original passion of being an Actor. Fast forward to today, despite working my regular full time job, I have worked on over 32 productions since that day... first, mostly as a background performer but last August, everything skyrocketed when I got booked for my first speaking role on a Short Film production called “Little Soul”. It is in post production right now and will be doing the Film Festivals rounds around the world soon. I have since landed Lead roles in 2 other short films, Supporting role in 3 others and have already been cast for two films shooting from April to May 2020. I PINCH myself everyday as this is so exciting yet so surreal. You can see my partial Filmography already on IMDb by searching for my name. There are still many credits missing. [IMDb Actor Profile & Filmography](IMDb.me/SylvainPlasse) Here are some of the productions I’ve had the great luck and opportunity to work on since last year: - HANDMAID’S TALE S03EP07 - Under His Eye - TLC Untold Stories of the E.R. - S13EP03 - Gunshot Affairs - SUITS S09EP10 - the very last episode of this iconic TV Series - Wedding Guest - REAL RED OCTOBER - National Geographic’s - Submarine Executive Officer - WITCHES of SALEM - Travel Channel USA - Sheriff’s Men (4 episodes) - SILENT WITNESS - New 2020 TV Series - Narcotics Officer - SPINNING OUT - Netflix - Arena Spectator - DARE ME - USA Network - Football Stadium Fan - MRS AMERICA - Netflix 2020 release - 1) Republican Supporter 2)Special Secret Agent - JUPITER’S LEGACY - Netflix 2020 release - Rich Brothel Patron - Z•O•M•B•I•E•S 2- Disney - Seabrook Resident - SECRET SOCIETY of SECOND BORN ROYALS - Disney - Rich Dignitary at Gala and several other projects, including unpaid student films. 2 Online / TV Commercials: - DAYMAK e-bike Florence Fat Tires - ParticipACTION Canada - English / French Interviewee YOUR ADVICE: Would anyone in the know, could offer some advice or suggestions on how I should proceed from here on as I, like all the other Actors/Actresses out there, aim to make it to Hollywood.... to “get discovered”? I looked into getting an Agent in Toronto but, it can be a bit of a challenge to find a reputable one, as many seem to have this gimmick of getting you to spend incredible amounts of money just to get headshots (which I did last month) from specific photographers they recommend.... but most have over inflated prices, which is probably done to give payback to the agents for sending them the business. If I was able to find and land these roles by myself so far, to move to the next level, I feel I need an Agent in California. Is it even possible for a Canadian Actor to get an Agent in the US? Any info, advice, questions you may have would be gratefully welcome. Thank you / Merci, Sylvain
I’ve been having one tough time writing the script for my demo reel. I know I don’t need to write a New York’s time bestseller or anything but it’s really bringing out why I never decided to become a writer. Do other actors hire people to write their demos? Or does everyone do it themselves, I feel like a lost cause in the writing department
I have been an actor for a while. I have been into recording engineering for a while. So I figured let's marry my love for both of those things. I am honestly just getting started. I get paid things here and there, but I'm not going to quit my day job or anything. Any and all feedback is appreciated. But be gentle. ;) Thanks ahead of time. mittstech.com/voice
Greetings. I am looking for a Digital Artist to create a custom image for a Video Game Voice Actors website. The image itself should have a 'Vibe' similar to these images: [Image 1](https://www.google.com/search?sa=G&hl=en_US&tbs=simg:CAQSoAIJEILHEhVbAzQalAILELCMpwgaYQpfCAMSJ_1MLhgRr7hfjFv8Muwz1C6Meoh7TKoU22CK0M9YqzSqPKIY21TjmJhowZ1fO9eD_1oswxUJ_1f7TvzrwtrEDKVRZ3bKvBQHOX1VHc8HFCs00aGLFFxlsp6wTPtIAQMCxCOrv4IGgoKCAgBEgS4PhutDAsQne3BCRqNAQoaCgdwYyBnYW1l2qWI9gMLCgkvbS8wNHRyOHMKHgoLbGl2aW5nIHJvb23apYj2AwsKCS9tLzAzZjZ0cQoXCgNkZW7apYj2AwwKCi9tLzA5ZzZwdmQKHQoKc2NyZWVuc2hvdNqliPYDCwoJL20vMDF6Ym53ChcKBWhvdXNl2qWI9gMKCggvbS8wM2ptNQw&q=anime+background+room+night&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwjRtYmBptznAhVNmHIEHX6iDmQQwg4oAHoECAcQJw&biw=1600&bih=796), [Image 2](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fst-gdefon.gallery.world%2Fwallpapers_original%2F406776_gallery.world.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fgallery.world%2Fru%2Fphoto-406776-art-noch-komnata-devochki-podrugi-veshchi-kompyuter-napitki-lampa-polki&tbnid=uJfhS474J0zxaM&vet=12ahUKEwiT9N6UptznAhUBXFkKHS_RC_UQMygCegUIARDAAQ..i&docid=_UU0lk1btVQw3M&w=1600&h=1000&itg=1&q=gaming%20nostalgia&ved=2ahUKEwiT9N6UptznAhUBXFkKHS_RC_UQMygCegUIARDAAQ), or check out the first few rows of [these images](https://www.google.com/search?q=gaming%20nostalgia&tbm=isch&tbs=rimg%3ACRCCxxIVWwM0ImAyXVyswVWfPGNzHRHXtbdQKerL9IIIbGG6P-LjK9P6-PNUy9fFDSUmF_19JxWPBZpqsoU1vehfzdelvbSMdgrU2SUH2SBwGCP0znBRftvs97k7j2N7YjJsZ8ySSDyJCpuIqEgkyXVyswVWfPBGNAnC4VJijQyoSCWNzHRHXtbdQEU07YnEiPHU8KhIJKerL9IIIbGEReVV8PTakuYkqEgm6P-LjK9P6-BFOZzvr_1cGPCyoSCfNUy9fFDSUmESFLlHVR_1rVOKhIJF_19JxWPBZpoRUqfJ_1WOICxwqEgmsoU1vehfzdRH-_13x6FHR30SoSCelvbSMdgrU2EdQp1vwrA6GaKhIJSUH2SBwGCP0RX5xUIoYTOhQqEgkznBRftvs97hFufckGJ4q40SoSCU7j2N7YjJsZEfMrSZlTDPOuKhIJ8ySSDyJCpuIRPEBXG8iNf7JhaICuyOORmlk&hl=en-US&ved=0CAIQrnZqFwoTCKC8pMWn3OcCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAF&biw=1583&bih=796), as well as ALL elements in the provided sketch. I am attempting to keep my budget under $400. This piece is important to me. There is definitely leeway within the image. If you would like to throw a book on the bookshelf (in the image) with your reddit name, deviantart name, etc.. I will not mind as long you point it out to me so I am aware of it. Also feel free to draw your pet or something within the image as well. PLEASE 'WATERMARK' YOUR IMAGE! Feel free to leave questions within the comments, but anything else, please follow the rules and PM me. Thanks!
Hi guys. When I was in high school I started pursuing acting professionally. I lived near enough to NYC that I had a manager there and I booked a few small roles in TV shows and movies. Then I went to college in rural Ohio and my manager and I parted ways, and my acting career was put on pause for a few years. I booked one pretty decent role on my own over that time (small role in a Sundance film that shot over the summer of my freshman year) but other than that, I couldn't audition or work. Maybe going to college was a stupid decision but idk, it happened. When I graduate I'm planning on moving to NYC to pursue acting as a career once again. What I'm not sure of is how to do that. I don't want to start back at square one again (no agent or manager, doing no-pay student films, etc.), but all my credits will be multiple years old and my manager and I did not end on great terms so I can't go back to her (she was also just not a great manager overall). Would it be weird to text all my old friends who didn't go to college and are now working actors to ask them to refer me to their agents? Will having some credits and union status mean anything to agents and managers, or will I be seen just the same as the thousands of other recent college grads looking for representation? Not that that's a bad thing, I just feel like I had some momentum going then lost it entirely for college, and I'm not sure how to proceed once I'm back in the game. Any advice from anyone who's taken a break from acting for a few years and then successfully gotten back to it would be greatly appreciated!
Hi all, I'm an actor and recently have been thinking of ways I can monetize my skills. I was thinking offering private audition coaching and college prep. A bit about myself, I'm 23, have a degree in theater performance and am a working actor in the Washington DC area. What would you suggest is the best way to get my name out there by offering this? I'm just nervous no one will take me seriously. Thanks for your help!
I auditioned for Peter and The Starcatcher and after auditioning I was given two minor roles to play. However, my two characters combined barely leave me with any lines in comparison to many other people who are co-starring in the play with me, and most of them are just playing one role and yet they still have more lines. I understand that everybody starts off small, but I still just feel like I am not able to show what I am truly capable of doing. No matter what is asked of me, I’m going to continue coming to rehearsal and perform for them exactly how they want. However, I just want to make sure that I am starting off where I am supposed to. If I’m somebody who dreams to become a successful actor not in just in theater, but in cinema, Is this the best way to get noticed? I just want to make sure that I’m on the correct path if I want to make it into cinema, and that I am not trying to get myself into a completely different branch of the industry.
Hey acting community. My girlfriend recently accepted a grad program in Houston, Texas and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the acting scene is like in that area? I have an extensive background in theatre from contemporary to Shakespeare, from Arthur Miller to Tennessee. Working on stage and in production. Also interested in doing other work such as V.O. and film/tv. I’m asking what is the vibe down there for a young actor/theatre maker down there? Any idea, places to look for and submit to? Thanks!
I rake a hefty salary on Fiverr making on average $6k a month. I have all 5 star reviews and I’m top rated. My customer service is to notch. Now, I’ve heard that folks get blacklisted by agents for being on the platform. My question is why?
So, for the past two days, not only has the back of my throat felt like it was shredded, but I've had an unparalleled amount of phlegm in my throat. This has overall made it feel bad to speak and gives my voice a more growling quality. What do you as a voice actor usually do when you experience this?
The ACX website says it takes an average of 6 hours to complete one finished hour. Is that pretty accurate in your experience? Also, how likely is it for a newbie to get consistent work? I figure if I can work 20 days a month, 6 hours a day, that'd be about $1,000 a month. Does my math add up? I'd be interested to hear from people who are also relatively inexperienced in this field (not necessarily professional actors) who've been doing this for 6 months to a year. Thanks
I'm writing a post for my blog on mobile apps for voice acting and I came across an app called "iAudition". The idea is that you hook up your USB mic and do your auditions wherever you are. It also allowed you to edit your recording. (Basic cutting I think.) Anyway, it seems to have disappeared. Did Voices.com gobble it up when they launched their own app? Or what's going on? Would love to hear from someone who knows. Also, if you know of any good apps for voice actors, please post 'em. Thanks!
I don't think Marlon was a great 'actor.' He was just doing his own thing.
Title kinda explains it. I live in the metro detroit area and I'm essentially a complete beginner. I have taken some classes for an elective and my teacher suggested acting should be something I try to take further. I wanna get the most bang for my buck with a subscription. I always hear about Backstage and Actor's Access being the main two for auditions. What would you suggest given my situation?
Hi there, I’m in the beginning of my acting journey. I’m trying to do as much as possible for my acting. This is what I did so far: -I take classes every month( classes are 1-3 times a week, depends on a studio) -I’ve scheduled a photo shoot with great headshot photographer. -I’m in a process of shooting scenes for my reel with a reelarc. - I take accent reduction and speech classes twice a week. I do travel a lot so whenever I’m in a new city like LA, London or Paris I try to take classes there as well. Right now I can spend around $1-2K a month on my career(sometimes less, sometimes more it depends). What else can I do to improve myself as an actor ? There’s this guy in LA who helps actors with their image/type and prepares them for the headshot session, is it worth it ? Do I need voice class? Thank you :)
