Working background in LA. by Nomad79  •  last post Feb 13th

Hello, I am a veteran on a pension. I like to work background for extra income. I have no desire to be a real actor but the flexibility and food on set is great for me as my side gig. I know it sounds crazy to say I love background but it works for me. I have mostly only worked non union in Louisiana. It’s been a while but I am now SAG. So I’m considering moving to LA to do background work. I only get 3k a month. With bills and rent is it possible to survive in LA just doing SAG background work. I know it’s probably depends on how hard I work and what gigs I get. But after looking at the cost of living, it’s tempting.

Never book but i think i know why.. by StrobeRogers  •  last post Feb 13th

Hello all, I never book. I finally got an answer. I don't commit enough. Which is weird because I think of myself as a 'method' actor haha. Most times I audition for things I don't have a real connection or everyone is white, and I'm just auditioning because I want to say I exhausted everything. Would more training help me commit more? Thanks

Headshot-Age Range-Character Type Post - Feb 13 by AutoModerator  •  last post Feb 13th

Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting; please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.

What little things can I bring into a rehearsal space to make it more homely? by Unhelpfulhelpful  •  last post Feb 12th

The rehearsal gods have blessed me and gifted me rehearsal rooms but the catch is there's absolutely no furniture whatsover. What should I bring in that'll help us actors feel more at home in the space?

Life is too short, and I want to do allot of things in the Cinematography Industry, I’m almost graduating and I like doing Digital Design but I also always though of acting I really like Movies and how they are made So I don’t know if I also Want to be a by Soloids  •  last post Feb 12th

I don’t think I’m good Enough, Im 17 which in my opinion allot of good actors start from a really much younger age, as well as feeling the pressure of graduating and what am I’m going to do with my life cause I don’t want to move out of my Island and go blindfolded onto USA. Anybody else feeling like this?

Audio Fiction Network - A community for Writers, Actors and Producers by JohnGaines_SE  •  last post Feb 12th

Hello fellow Producers, Actors and Writers! Audio Fiction Network is a creator driven discord community of audio drama actors, writers, and producers getting together to chill, share our love of the medium, and have a reliable place to share work and get feedback. We have creative server events for our members such as Table Reads where we periodically have our actor members do cold reads and give direct feedback for the writers to help them improve their draft. We currently have over 700 members but we are currently looking for more smart people to join in on the workshopping! The more, the merrier. We've relaunched our creative hub and we'd like to extend an invite to folks here who may be interested in it as well and find it useful. All members are also invited to the discord's creative hub where we have over 360 produced audio drama scripts for any writer's viewing pleasure, outlines, templates, and a royalty free commercially useable sound library of over 200 GB+ for audio drama producers and sound designers to use whenever and however they want. **Link to our community:** [https://discord.gg/XsVNyVB](https://discord.gg/XsVNyVB) **GIFS of our Creative Hub** **AFN Creative Hub: Scripts Library** [https://imgur.com/z7AdeQn](https://imgur.com/z7AdeQn) **AFN Creative Hub: Sound Library** [https://imgur.com/AJkB1S6](https://imgur.com/AJkB1S6)

I have been cast in a play and my character has a stutter. How do I do it convincingly? by RocknRollins  •  last post Feb 12th

I am looking for any and all tips on how to put on a convincing stutter that sounds natural and not insulting. Everything I can find online is about helping actors overcoming a stutter. At the moment I am staggering the words and when it finally comes out it's as if it's painful to say. What I'm doing doesn't feel like the best way. So yeah, any advice welcome.

Should you send casting agencies your personal projects? by potential_key  •  last post Feb 12th

How to be involved in Children's Television/Youth Entertainment? by Yaars23  •  last post Feb 12th

I always think about how much I would love being a host for a children's TV show (think Blues Clues) or doing the voices for other children's shows. I know some of these shows are done on a local level--think local PBS shows. Are these just regular actors? Are they folks who have a passion for doing work for children? How would one get cast--the usual way?

Go to NYU or Move to LA by treypoerschke  •  last post Feb 12th

I'm 22 years old and have reached final callbacks to go to NYU for graduate school. Obviously a great oppurtunity but incredibly expensive. If i want to be film actor is it worth it to go to NYU and train or should i just move to LA and try to start a career. Background: I have no reel, or any acting experience. I took one class called fundamentals of acting at the University of Texas where the teacher called me into her office after class to tell me I should really consider acting as a career. I also did theatre in middle school and early high school. I do have a true passion for film and acting as an art form though and its pretty much all i think about.

Pilot season by Kicksinthemix  •  last post Feb 11th

How is it going for everyone? I know things changed in the past years and now they make offers for name actors, but isn’t there still auditions for unknown actores? I want to audition but my manager is getting me zero auditions and gives me this excuse. I want to fire him! Whats the point of having a manager if he does absolutely nothing for us? Also why would he want to rep me if he doesn’t want to do any work ?

Is it necessary to play Shakespeare, Racine, Corneille, etc ? by Theodore_Long991  •  last post Feb 11th

Sorry if I sound like an immature millenial but I loathe classical authors such as Shakespeare, and in every acting school they seem obsessed with them. So, is it like a mandatory step that every actor have to go through ?

Seeking Representation - How to get referrals? by geminidandelion  •  last post Feb 11th

Hey friends! I'm an LA based actor. I had a recurring role on an Amazon tv show a few years ago (was in 9/10 episodes). While I've had a few managers and agents over the past couple of years, I wasn't going out on auditions and I am agent-less once more. It's been so challenging finding quality representation. I have sent email and mail submissions to many agencies, done a showcase once or twice, but I feel like the type of representation I need only comes from a great referral. How can I find agency referrals if I don't have any close friends to refer me?

Theatre Gig and Manager's Cut by thatsmetrying  •  last post Feb 11th

My daughter is a young actor who has a manager. So far he has helped her get booked on a reenactment non-union cable episode, but not much else. On her own, my daughter auditioned and was cast in a sub 99 seat theatre production here in Los Angeles. My question: does she need to give her manager a cut of the theatre production where she is getting paid very little? Thanks for any help!

Asking for advice on Voice Acting by ellellohwhydee  •  last post Feb 11th

\[The questions will be at the bottom of the post since the post might be quite long\] Hi! I am an aspiring voice actor who has currently nothing on his belt. No formal training, no experience, and certainly no money for a coach. Not to mention I currently only own a 10$ mic and also no experience in audio engineering. But I am still determined to improve, and I'm not entirely in a rush as well so I'm taking this at a brisk pace. I actually have been doing this passion project trying to make an audiobook of a novel from one of my favorite game series. I'll try to learn the craft as I go through that, and even if it is of bad quality right now, I think it'd be fun to listen to in the future. Anyways, on to my questions. \- How long should a usual session last? I tried to do a 40 minute straight one before but at the 20 minute mark, the quality was already deteriorating. Is it something that I will get used to in the future or is it set by biology? \- Is the practice of trying to create an audiobook for a beginner like me a bad idea? Should I really go wait until I have proper training before I actually attempt to do voice stuff? \- Are there really skills that I can just pick up by feeling through my own voice myself, and exploring the audio editing software (Audacity) on my own? Or is it better to learn from somewhere first? I apologize if these are questions that have been answered before in the subreddit. Thank you for your time and I hope you guys have a wonderful day!

I could be broke or I could be... well broke either way. (UK/US/AUS) by kvvvvvvvv_  •  last post Feb 11th

Hi hello - I’m just starting out on this journey. After almost a decade of wanting to do it and after feeling many shifts between want and then fear and deciding not to I’ve decided at 29 I’ll never be able to live with myself unless I try. So I’m going all in and needed some opinions. I currently live in Melbourne, have some friends who are directors and actors and some working in the scene. None I’m overly comfortable telling what I’m doing as we aren’t that close/ I’d rather hit them up depending on the advice of my fellow and much more wise r/acting compadres...Thing as well is I know that Melbourne is small and clicky that can be good or kinda bad in the long run because you get a bit stuck here. (Watched this happen to a friend) Ideally I would like to do screen, I’ve signed up for some Stella Adler method training and a few other things. I dont really want to fully pursue this here though with Australia being a big old island and have been tossing up where else I could go? Potentially even elsewhere in Aus. In was thinking London (for cultural reasons mainly) and I realise it would mean a lot of theatre (or so this group emphasises) but I can’t see that as a bad thing and wouldn’t mind a broad range of training as I launch into this. I’m stuck as to whether I just go balls to the wall in Melbourne (excuse my language I’m surprised I haven’t sworn yet) and try get an agent build up things and THEN go to the UK or US. Or, if I just go ham overseas and try do that there. I foresee struggle and eating cup noodles in my future either way but any experiences/ advice are so appreciated. Also - as I decided to jump straight into dialect training whether living in the UK would mean most roles (entry level or whatever) would require me to do a London accent. Thanks in advance - this group has been giving me so much insightful info X K
