I want to become an actor. I've been pursuing acting for a few years and I'm finally starting to become accomplished. But my parents are pushing me to go to school to get a degree in something other than acting and I'm worried that it'll ruin my acting career. I am considering studying computer science, though, because it's a high-paying job and I can work freelance, which could give me the money and flexibility to pursue acting. Natalie Portman graduated from Harvard with a degree in psychology and she's still very successful so I'm thinking it might not be impossible. I'm 20. If I decide to go to a 4 year college to get a degree in computer science, would my acting career be ruined?
I just moved to New Hampshire and am working on establishing my acting career in the Northeast. I am wondering if there is any advice from actors (theater and film/commercial) regarding jumping in up here? Is Boston Casting the best casting site for the area? What talent agencies are recommended? Is there any work to be had in NH or VT? Thanks for your input.
Hello my fellow Canadian actors. I booked a union commercial, principal actor, one day at scale. That’s all I know for pay. It’s a national car commercial. I understand I get my day rate but what can I expect in terms of additional pay? All I know is it’s a national spot. Any feedback would be much appreciated, TIA!
Hi Voice Actors! I am yet another person wanting to break into the voice over industry. Ultimately I’d like to end up voicing audiobooks, but I’m open to any sort of work to get me started. I’ve had some voice training in the past, but like a lot of people I’m on a tight budget. I’ve decided to invest in equipment and a home booth and I’ve been teaching myself to edit in Reaper. After watching a lot of YouTube videos and messing around, I’ve put together my first demo reel. I know a professionally produced demo reel is the way to go but at the moment I simply can’t afford it. I also want to be sure that I can actually do the editing side of things so that if I do get hired for a spot I know I can deliver a clean, good quality recording. So far it’s been a very steep learning curve, and I know there are things I just can’t hear yet when I listen back. Some things I can hear but don’t really know what to do about them! I’m quite pleased with this first demo, though I know I have a long way to go! I’m having trouble with mouth clicks, and I think it’s because my mouth is too wet rather than being dehydrated. I also have a few mumbled words here and there. I would really appreciate some feedback on the production side of things, but any feedback at all on how I can improve would be most welcome! https://soundcloud.com/user-717849517/commercial-demo-reel Thanks for your help!
Beginning actor hear who is probably overthinking. I booked a lead in a web series which is awesome. Anyway, sometimes with scripts, a voice just comes out of it, i definitely try not to force it. But it makes me wary of sounding cliche and one dimensional. Think Christina Aguilera in Burlesque, that innocent good girl voice (i wasnt a fan of it personally). To me that sounded forced and boxed the character in. With the character i booked, something Similar is coming out of it and i am worried that i dont sound like a person, that i sound like a character stuck in a box. Looking for advice, experiences, opinions, anything. Thank you!
So I've been doing research for a few weeks on mics as I'll be getting into a lot of voice over in the coming days, it's been a dream of mine for a long time and very soon I'll be getting my start! I've mainly been leaning towards getting a Blue Yeti, specifically a Yeti Pro or the X. For awhile I've been leaning into the Pro but the X also gets a lot of praise. Blue Yeti sounds pretty reliable from some of the other voice actors and reviewers I've seen talk about it so it seems like a good starting mic, then I could possibly upgrade along the way. So I'm wondering if anyone's compared the two before, and I'm trying to determine which one is most suited for me. The Pro also has XLR and USB so it sounds like its more versatile. I also operate an iMac late 2015 model, so I'd also like some recommended programs for a Mac user.
In one week I will have my first ever callback. I did an online casting but now I am meeting them in person. Got a short scene which I have to study but I already know all of the lines. Never been more nervous about something before (job wise) and I really want to do well. And I do think that I have a shot at the role which would be so crazy to think that I will be a part of the cast of my favorite show. Are there any really really important tips? What are things that many actors do wrong and how to avoid them? Thank you for everyone who answers !!
I watched a video from David Patrick Green on how you should stop going to auditions. He said this is because a self-tape is just as good and said he got some roles like this. Is this good advice and true to every role? Would this also be true to agencies who are looking for actors?
So my dream is to become an hollywood actor. Im not American. Im swedish, That’s a problem i know. I practice my english and my american accent everyday. Im not 18 yet and i won’t say my exact age like you prob understand. But my plan is to move to america for like a year and get a feel of the culture and see what i can do. I already know im gonna make it, There’s no other way in my mind. I just need advice to help me along the way.
Hi! Straight to the point - I am on the fence about starting acting. I am likely over thinking it but here is a bit about me - I’ve never been outgoing and was always introverted and shy as a child & I have anxiety. However, although it’s tough to deal with I am constantly trying to improve and am better than I used to be. However, although I didn’t always want to act, I have always liked film; my friends and I would recreate films and shoot them & I would “direct” and edit, I have always loved watching movies. I’m generally an artistic person (I like drawing/painting & graphic design, videography/photography, fashion, music, etc). Anyway, recently I’ve really been into acting, I’ve taken a few acting classes (4 I think?) last year and I really like it, and have tried to get better on my own and learn about it. But performing makes me very self conscious and anxious and I don’t think I would handle rejection well. I also know the people industry can be tough, some even rude & cold. Auditions would make me nervous. Despite all this, when I see behind the scenes videos of actors on set, or imagine playing a character different from myself, it makes me really want to do it. I don’t know, I am very confused about this and maybe outside opinions will help me. My apologies for my writing being all over the place. TL;DR - I am an introverted & anxious young person but am interested in acting and don’t know if I should start to try to do it seriously. Any advice is much appreciated :)
Mean Girls Bway just cast Cameron Dallas as Aaron Samuels. Cameron Dallas is a former “Vine star” known for just looking cute/taking his shirt off on camera and his “comedy” He may be cast solely to sell tickets due to his following, but couldn’t CDs cast a real actor? Does casting really care about social media following over talent nowadays?
Acting is a creative passion of mine from a young age and I want to stretch that ‘muscle’ while still keeping my 9-6 day job in advertising. How can I do this in NYC for free and/or minimal cost? Thanks in advance for any and all advice from other fellow actors!
Pretty much as the title states. Also, I’m 25, female, biracial. I was born in Canada and moved to America at a fairly young age. I currently live in Los Angeles and I’m seeking a manager. I have solid headshots and a pretty good resume for a green actor. I’m currently waiting on better reel footage, but I have a short reel. Should I be looking for reps in Canada? I feel like I might be missing out on potential roles. In LA, I’m a small fish in a big pond. As a Canadian citizen, I know I’m able to work on some Canadian productions that Americans aren’t. Any thoughts?
Hey guys, So I’m planning on going to school for acting (I’m specialize in improv, not in actual acting) and one of my friends sat down and talked to me about this. How agencies, commercials, etc don’t really care about your education but more about your looks. I’ve had problems with my memory from a concussion I had awhile back. But! I am a very committed person and I don’t stop until I get the results I need, whatever it might be. I know I have the right mindset for this, and it has been my dream to be an actor. I’m well aware that the industry treats people like they’re nothing and I know it’s going to be hard to get a job right after I graduate, but it’s something that I want to do. I really do appreciate what my friend said + I value their opinion. I did have second thoughts after the talk, I am literally putting all my eggs in one basket. I also come from a family that doesn’t have much, so the thought does cross my mind that I’m wasting their money. What are your guy’s thoughts on this? You can be as brutally honest as you want, I really don’t mind.
Following things make us suspicious about Actorive website:- # Actorive has provided its company’s address as “5 WARD LANE,FILER,ID 83328“. However, when we searched for this location on Google Maps, we found out it is an address of a residential farm area but not an address of any company or shop or store. So, it makes Actorive a very suspicious website since legit online stores always provide the authentic detailed company’s address but scam online stores always found to be hiding their identity or providing a fake address. On top of that, lots of similar kinds of suspicious sites using the same address such as Agenotsy, DarrellHartley, Outfityle, Strapelet, Shrinkela and so on # These days multiple new online stores are claiming to sell various items on huge discount, but most of them are scams. So, it’s better to stay away from the new online stores or at least do some research before you purchase something from the new online stores because most of these new online stores don’t deliver the purchased items to their clients or, deliver completely different or very low-quality items. Hi all, I'm looking at moving and was wondering how actors look at finding places to live with a fluctuating income and still maintaining a decent quality of life. I make enough to live, be happy and pursue my career. But sometimes it's almost like I feel like I shouldn't be living somewhere that's within my budget but at the top end of it because I need to 'save as much as I can'. Is there a different way you all look at this?
In movies when the main characters are talking let’s say in the backround what are the people talking to eachother about, I mean like let’s say in the halls in school, when they are walking, what do they talk about?
I was researching different routes into acting online and came across an interesting article by timeshighereducation.com saying "language degrees also appear to be a good requisite for a career in acting." Since I am currently studying for a foreign language degree myself, I decided to test the validity of that quote by trying to find actors with foreign language degrees to see how they got into the industry, but so far I've been rather unsuccessful. Thus, I was wondering if anyone knows of any actors (well-known or otherwise) who possess a foreign language degree, as it may (or may not!) help me get into acting. Any help is much appreciated.
