Rural Area by Kristus_ridder  •  last post Jan 23rd

I have been acting for quite a while now, about 14 years, in local play companies and would like to branch out into larger productions. My only problem is that I live in the absolute boon docks, about 1 hour from a large city, and have no possibility to move to Atlanta or Fayettville, GA. I could feasibly get a job as an actor in the tourist trap shows in the close-ish city if one ever opens up, but that seams like a dead end to follow. So my question is, Should I just give up and stick to local plays, try to get an acting job at the tourist trap places, or is there an option I'm not seeing? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Lets read scenes together! by Lovejenlove  •  last post Jan 23rd

I just had an idea to connect with other actors over skype to read scenes. Not for auditions, but just for practice. One of my acting classes I visited said to read as many scenes as possible to exercise those acting muscles. We can take turns finding scenes and just read them together whenever we're available! I'm down to read any character that falls within Female 16-28

Performing naked - Penis advice by BullionGodspeed  •  last post Jan 23rd

I'm happy with my pretty regular dick, but am worried that he'll shrivel up on stage if I'm nervous or I suppose even cold. What can I do to ensure he is in good form for an audience? EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback. For context it's a nude poetry reading. I'm not an actor, I want to push against body image/anxiety issues from when I was younger. I'm not trying to look like a porn star, more to prevent a worst case scenario.

Promoting community theater by JuanDeGeek  •  last post Jan 23rd

Please help (suggestions needed) Been trying to promote community theater. Like every other board member in charge of promotions/marketing I already have a real job so little ever gets accomplished. We have approximately 100k in population, a blue color county with multiple decent troupes and venues. I am tired of empty seats and tired of meeting people who have never heard of us and our productions. Efforts so far; Theater club through neighboring village park and recreation department where I negotiate deals and specials like a house tour, meet actors or crew, appetizers, etc a (this will get the axe by next month without more results) Next; Contact retirement communities and other groups about group outings. Promotional videos, individual shows, each troupe, and maybe even a video on the state of community theater in general.

How To Tell The Difference? by CaliforniaStoked  •  last post Jan 23rd

I want to first apologize for how this post may sound. I know its not going to come out the right way and might sound rude, but I'm genuinely curious, so I'll take the criticism. How do you filter out the good film schools from the bad film schools, as far as final product for reels go? I have some great reel footage from a few low budget TV shows that I did a few years ago. The only problem is, I feel like it may be be negatively impacting me when submitting for projects, because I lost so much weight since then, and look drastically different. I'm way skinnier and fit now, and honestly I look a lot better. So I'm trying to redo my reel from scratch, and although its been awhile since I've done unpaid work, I'm considering doing it again for a bit, so I can get some updated footage for a new reel. My one concern tho, is that I'm going to be wasting my time because we all know student films can be a hit or miss as far as quality and production goes. So my question is, do you have anything specific you look for when submitting yourself to unpaid student films? Are some schools known to have better quality end products then others? Do you only do final student thesis projects, because they have more expereince at the school? What do you specifically look for, so it won't be a waste of time if your one goal is to get reel footage? Also, before someone suggests I just film my reel myself with friends... my friends who act are all working actors and don't have the time, nor do I have the proper equipment. So submitting to other peoples films would be the easier route for me at the moment.

Audition Tapes on YouTube by CuspChaser111  •  last post Jan 23rd

**Good actors often don't get parts.** The audition tape for Pretty Little Liars with Shay what's her name is awful. The audition tape for Zach Effron (I can't find it anymore) is awful. The audition tape for Blake Lively Gossip Girl bored me to tears. The audition tapes for Miley Cyrus and ScarJo were meh. The audition tape for Jennifer Garner for Daredevil is cute but I'm not like WOW. The audition tape for Henry Thomas in ET was actually an improv (just learned this) and it is phenomenal, he got it. Apparently when he read scripted material it was not that great but good thing he could play dungeons and dragons. The audition tape for Hugh Laurie for House is one of my favorites. Rachel for The Notebook too. And man the audition for Precious - Gabourey is mindblowingly good. The audition tape for Aaron Paul Breaking Bad is great, and it proves even if you miss lines just get back into the character and you will book it. He's very funny and natural so that's a cool lesson in itself. Moral of the story: How many times can I start a sentence by writing "The Audition Tape" Are there any tapes I missed? I'd love to see. Thanks!

Help with compensation by Roshek712  •  last post Jan 23rd

Hello everyone! Hope all is well. I could use you guys' professional opinion. I'm in the process of hiring a voice actor for a short film. They're reviewing the script rn, and I've been asked to provide an amount I'm willing to pay for this job. Gig specs: \- Predicted 1 day of recording, 2 if any extreme changes are necessary. \- It's strictly a narration gig, so not a lot of sync necessary. It just goes over the film. \- Length is 5:44 mins. \- 450 words, give or take. \- THEY ARE UNION WORKERS. That means under SAG-AFTRA. \- They are professionals. Like, as pro as it gets: games, anime, animation. The whole shabang. Any help/insight/input would be super valuable. I'm willing to pay generously if that tips the scales towards a "yes" from them, but don't wan't to go completely bankrupt. Thank you!

Best Self Taping Camera for the Traveling Actor? by DirectivePodcast  •  last post Jan 22nd

Hi there! I'm doing my MFA in the UK currently and came into some money recently. I wanted to invest in some kind of camera that I can use when I get back in the game once I finish my program in July. Only problem is I have to be able to get it back to the states easily when I return. I've tossed around getting a 4k webcam, 4k Gopro, or donating my kidney to get a new phone with a quality camera. What would you guys recommend for the mobile actor that won't break the bank? I've got a mic and lighting covered so it's just this bit. Thanks! TLDR: Live internationally, moving eventually, need a self tape camera that is travel friendly.

SERIOUS Actors/Actresses of Reddit – when shooting nude sex scenes, what happens when one of the participants gets visibly aroused? by footopia  •  last post Jan 22nd

I mean, is everybody okay with it and you simply keep going or is it considered a *faux pas* and the shooting stops until the „perpetrator” cools down? And while we are on the subject – do you have some tricks to avoid rubbing genitals against each other?

Callbacks by CuspChaser111  •  last post Jan 22nd

So I'm in a callback today, which is great and I get them all the time, and I do the same exact thing I had done in my audition. The director looks at me, and is like quiet, staring daggers at me. Casting director is jumpy (I go into this office all the time, they're great folks there) and is like, "Uh, do you want her to try it another way?" Director is really quiet and is like, "Uh. Yeah. Can you not play it that way - at all? Like can you play the exact opposite?" LOL. I have been doing this commercial callbacks for years and I am thinking, "If you didn't like what I did on my original tape, why did you call me back?" So I do it completely opposite, but honestly directors, if you're reading this - which I doubt - don't call someone back if you didn't like what they did on the original tape. Or if you do let the actor know ahead of time before their first take to do it another way. If not it shows us all you have no idea (or your ad agency/client that is paying you big time) what you're doing.

Getting into professional acting in London by lovetempests  •  last post Jan 22nd

Hi there, I live outside of London atm but I’m soon moving to be moving there to pursue a career in acting. I haven’t been to drama school but I have some professional and amateur credits; however, I don’t think it’s enough to get on spotlight. If you’re not on spotlight, agents won’t accept you, and if you don’t have an agent, you can’t get serious jobs... what should I do? It’s a total catch 22 and I can’t afford to do a second degree in drama school, plus I’ve heard from other actors that it’s not totally necessary. I don’t want to be in even more debt. Are there agencies which consider young actors without spotlight? How can I improve my chances of getting paid work? Any advice at all is very welcome. Thank you!

Where is one of the more booming acting cities in the U.S.? by zod1ac_moz  •  last post Jan 22nd

I've been hearing a lot of things lately talking about how New York and L.A. are oversaturated with actors. People have told me that Atlanta, Georgia is the next booming city? So, are they correct? Should I try to head for Atlanta or should I still try to go to L.A.?

I just realized. Mads Mikkelsen is so good actor that every time I see the actor in real life I can't think of him anything except one of his characters by DirtySlut69_69  •  last post Jan 22nd

When I look for images of him I just see images of his characters based on his facial tone or facial expressions and when I try to think of him as person I just can't. I can't believe he is real life human. I can only see his characters. Talk about life goals

Voice Age Range by Ghosty91AF  •  last post Jan 21st

Hi all, first time posting here. I trained through Voice Coaches and I'm an aspiring voice actor. Recently I attended PAX South and did some networking with the voice actors there and was directed to their studio website. The problem I'm having right now is that on their demo reel submission page, they asked for my "vocal age range". I'm really passionate about voice acting, but haven't made any progress since I completed my training a few years ago due to a trifecta of crippling depression, crippling anxiety, and managing an illness. Which brings me to my question: I'm 27 years old, and I do have quite a wide range. But, during my training, I do not recall if I was told my vocal age range. How do I figure that out exactly?

Before going into VO full-time... by tartsntwats  •  last post Jan 21st

What were you doing as your dayjob/part-time job while you were building up your skills as a voice actor? I'd love to hear what your road to success was and how challenging (or easy) it was for different people! P.S. If you're still doing VO part-time, any tips on how to manage time better?
