Want to start acting at 23. What are my chances of success?? by cheshirecat6669  •  last post Jan 7th

Okay, so first I would like to say I don’t expect to ever become a Hollywood actress, especially with the very limited experience I have at 23, but I’ve always been into acting. As a kid, my mom never enrolled me in acting classes for whatever reason, even though I begged her. The few plays I tried out for at my elementary/high school were DOA because we had this very exclusive theater teacher who never gave me a chance (not that she had to, but I do feel she was especially exclusive and harsh). But I have always admired and kind of envied people in high school who were so into theater, and people in general who’s lives are consumed by acting. I wish that was how it was for me. I have a passion for great acting. Basically, my question is, what are my chances of ever becoming a successful stage actor this late in life? Please be as honest as possible. If the answer is slim I’d rather hear it from you guys. I recently enrolled in an acting class for beginners at my local theater and want to see how it goes. If this is the wrong subreddit for a question like this, I’m sorry! Please let me know where I could go instead. Thanks for any advice ahead of time.

Any ideas, advice or hints for a Portland Actor? by lruF  •  last post Jan 7th

My friend suggested I post this here. I've been acting for 10+ years (high school, college, and a little bit of local theater) in Oregon. Not Portland especially, but I worked on a couple productions when I was in high school (not important now) and one for Fertile Grounds (an opportunity for new plays) and one for a local theater with some acclaim. However, didn't get the best reviews. The latter two roles were fun and breathed a bit of life into me, but that was a little more than a year ago. I did some work in a short film with a couple local Portland actors... and hell it was fun, but, I haven't heard much from it. I went to college for acting. I went to a great school on the west coast and eventually, after a lot of struggles with depression, anxiety and alcoholism I ended up dropping out of college. I stuck around until I'd overstayed my welcome and headed north toward Portland. I've been working here for a while in a few different lines of business but... I miss acting. Kind of put myself on a hiatus of acting. PATA (Portland Area Theater Alliance) were real champions and helped me find both of the roles that happened post-college. College was roles every once and a while, and attempting to get a degree in acting helped me out a lot. I've been in a rut. Simply put. Mainly restricted by myself, depression and anxiety due to some recent events. I was honestly wondering if there was anybody out there with some ideas for a 25+ year old actor, living in Portland (Oregon) trying to get some fire back in his belly, and just basically trying to put myself back out there. If you have any suggestions for getting back out there, coming out of a rut and or just putting ones nose back to the grind stone... just comment, help me out. I'm looking for any suggestions. Whatever might be helpful. TL;DR: Portland, OR Actor. 10+ years of acting experience. Refell in love with acting in high school. Then I went to college for acting, did it for a while and dropped out. I tried getting back out there with the assistance of a few peers and struggled. I'd like to make a better go of it, but am looking for suggestions, ideas, tactics, exercises etc.

Voice Actress (possibly 2) needed to Voice-Over Characters by Nafei93  •  last post Jan 7th

Titanforged Entertainment is looking for a voice actress to create dialogue voice-overs for characters. Our current project is a ***3D Multiplayer Tabletop RPG Game*** containing ordinary tabletop games but using characters instead of ordinary pieces. You can think of it as characters from a MOBA used as pieces for board games such as chess, ludo and so forth. Here are the two characters that needs voice acting. If you think you could handle one of them, send me a PM and let's talk! **REQUIRED:** It is required that you are able to post-process your own voice-overs to make them sound incredible. Your voice may sound nice without post-processing but let's make it sound amazing and RPG-like with some editing on top of it. **The position is paid. We will discuss further in PM.** # Elvish Archer https://i.redd.it/fa4egzz3b2921.png # Demonic Queen - This screenshot does not show the finished state of the character. https://i.redd.it/fa1mqfk7b2921.png

If you could change one thing about the audition process, what would it be? by TheaterNerd  •  last post Jan 6th

We all know how nerve-wracking the audition process can be! If you could change any one thing about it, what would it be?

Oops! by OneOneOne1  •  last post Jan 6th

Hey everyone, Hoping someone else has made the same mistake and can help me out... I was in a different market for a while and recently paid my union dues. I’m back in the city to audition this week and just realized my new AEA card is being sent out...

Where can I find actors talking about their actual process? by banananuttt  •  last post Jan 6th

It seems incredibly hard to find. I've gone to SAG-Foundation, Off Camera with Sam Jones, Audrey helps actors and more. It seems really challenging to find actors talking about how they break down a script and put on the amazing performances that they do. what gives?

Inception: A Passion Project by animASonus  •  last post Jan 6th

Hi! New-ish performance actor here. I'm starting a solo project called "Inception: A Passion Project" where I memorize and accurately recite the entirety of the movie 'Inception' in one shot, no edits, to a playthrough of the movie with the voices muted. I was wondering if there's anyone familiar with the adaptation industry who would be willing to give me advice on 1) how best to avoid legal trouble (obtaining rights to use and publish Warner Bros content) and 2) how to go about memorizing and reciting a script of that length. Some quick background: I believe I have the unofficial record for most times seeing Inception, having lost count around 86 since it's release in theaters and subsequent release on DVD (hence 'A Passion Project'). Given my experience with the material, I don't believe I'll have significant difficulty with the content itself, but I've never had to memorize more than a few lines in the few plays I've been in. Keeping all of that in my head and being able to recite it perfectly while staring into a camera for almost 3 hours straight is going to be where I'll have the most difficulty. To add to the challenge, having the movie play alongside my recitation will force me to lip sync with the actors on and off screen. It's a significant undertaking, but I don't have a solid deadline, just to complete it before the end of the year. I would also like to chronical the process on a platform like Twitch with the final production being posted to Youtube. If anyone is familiar with the legal side of broadcasting rehearsals, I'd also like some insight from professionals, up to and including if anyone would actually enjoy watching something like that. Thanks in advance~!

Any tips on delivering a difficult first line of a play? by QR63  •  last post Jan 5th

I’m playing Theseus in my theater’s play of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, starting next week. I feel confident in my ability of delivering the role and all the lines beliavably, except for the opening line. If you know the story, you know that Theseus says the first line of the play. In our Finnish translation, the dialogue is simplified from the original. The opening line translated back to English is ”*I cannot wait*”. This line feels like it’s from the middle of a conversation and I find it incredibly hard to deliver in a way that it doesn’t feel like it’s from a script. I tried suggesting to our director that me and the actress playing Hippolyta would walk out from the back and talk while walking, but he wants us to be standing on stage when the curtain rises. Does anyone have advice for delivering this line?

help understanding a brief's age range? by glossipgirl  •  last post Jan 5th

i came across an audition notice for a play, where there is a character aged in her 20s-30s. however they have stated that as it is a youth production, the age ranges "do not correlate to the required age of the actor". i don't really understand what they mean by this though. i'm 15 with an age range of around 13-17. do you guys think i'd be able to audition?

Should I write my own monologue? by storiesandstars  •  last post Jan 5th

My goal is to get signed to an agency this year. I have a hard time finding monologues that I feel really showcase and too classical. Some people recommend writing your own and getting multiple opinions, while some people say never to do it. Some people recommend using monologues from little-known shows, which I wanted to do but I fear that it might be recognized and I'd immediately be compared to the original actor. I've performed a few monologues for classes and even then after searching for the right one, I feel as it I just settle on one that's good enough. The logic I've got from writing your own is that I believe that I can deliver to the best of my ability if I write my own and leave a better impression. TLDR; Should I write my own monologue for an audition for an agent or find one even if I feel often they don't really showcase my ability?

L.A. Pilot Season by reddit0604  •  last post Jan 5th

An agent reached out to me a month ago about a meeting with her (this) January which is great, but I am a teen actor who lives outside of L.A. ( TX ) and my mom isn’t sure I should travel there for the meeting. I was hoping to sign with this agent for pilot season in order to get in rooms that I can’t get myself. What to do?

Atlanta Voice Actors, who are some good coaches or mentors around here? by sicolekilla  •  last post Jan 5th

So I live in metro Atlanta and am getting started and I'm primarily interested in Character acting not so much audiobook reading or commercials, I've been auditioning for small fandub projects and things on Casting Call Club, but while I'm doing to that to get a bit of experience I need to find a coach or experienced actor to show me how to improve and what next steps to take. Not only career wise, but I would also like someone who can help me develop my voice and everything. Does anyone know any coaches or experienced talent who'd be willing to listen and teach a bit?

Online acting classes? by Cordath  •  last post Jan 4th

I'm working on getting into doing voiceover, but I'm finding that I need to work on my acting abilities and my ability to dissect a script. I'm taking part in some plays locally, but the theater around here is VERY casual. Like, any ability is fine even if your 'acting' only consists of reading the lines in a funny voice. Because the standards are so low, it means there isn't a whole lot to learn from the people you work with. I don't think there's anyone with any formal acting training; most of the skill the best actors around here have is derived from experience and trail and error. I've looked for acting classes and there are diddly squat within at least a 150 mile radius. Because of this, I'm turning to the internet. Does anyone know of any GOOD online acting classes? Because my focus is primarily voiceover, I don't think it would be a terrible option as 99.9% of the time, I'm just standing in front of a microphone and all the emotion has to be conveyed in my voice. I know John Windsor Cunningham does them, but I can't find anything about him on the site. Anybody who's asked has only received an ominous 'pm me for more information'. Is he credible? If not, what other alternatives are there? Any help is most appreciated.

Stigma against demo reel reviews? by Wytepeephole789  •  last post Jan 4th

Kind of an odd question. I sent a short film to three of my agencies to see if it was worth putting on actors access. None of them have gotten back to me/aren’t responding to my request for feedback. Is there something I did wrong?

How important is a college degree when looking for work as an actor? by tyler35855  •  last post Jan 3rd

I've been taking acting classes since I was little, and still currently take them now. I'm from Pittsburgh, and achieved something every theater kid from Pittsburgh dreams of... I got into Carnegie Mellon University for drama, but wasn't able to attend because of costs. I come from a pretty poor family, and college was always out of the question. As I turn 21, I've been noticing that almost all working actors have a college degree. I feel like I'm underqualified because I don't have a college degree. Any advice? how important is a college degree??My goal is to work regularly as an actor in Pittsburgh or NYC, and work on small indie films, in the hopes of writing, directing, and starring in my own one day. Any advice?

Headshot-Age Range-Character Type Post - Jan 3 by AutoModerator  •  last post Jan 3rd

Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.
