Should I not even try? (16m) by SquatchHunter69420  •  last post Jan 13th

I'm a 16-year-old aspiring comedian and actor, and I just finished a draft of a comedy script I want to film over the summer- and act in. I've done some acting. Not a lot. I auditioned for a short film being made in my school last year, and the director loved the "emotion" I portrayed. I made a comedy short last year, which is deleted now, and it actually turned out okay. I'm no Bill Murray, but I actually... acted. The other short never came together. Cancelled. In my video production class, my acting is awful in my own shorts, but servicable with other directors. I don't know what it is- I can't direct myself. In person, I am expressive and even funny at times, and feel I understand acting- I just get so damn nervous! So... should I even try? Is my dream of director/writer/actor/editor/comedian too ambitious? Thanks.

Actor's Admin Group (Los Angeles) by Brian Kurtis  •  last post Jan 12th

Happy Saturday Stage32 folks!  My name is Brian, and I'm looking to put together an admin group to meet on a weekly basis.  This group is intended for anyone who wants to progress in their career, but may need some extra support or motivation.  Ideally, this group would be intended for actors, but everyone is welcomed and anyone can benefit from it.  I'm only looking to put together a group of about 5 or 6 people (it's been my experience that a smaller admin group tends to work better).  This is also going to be Los Angeles based.  So, having said all of that, if you live in LA (or around LA and willing to commute) and are interested, message me!  Happy New Year, and best of luck to everyone trying to make it in this industry!

Cheers,

Brian

Strong Cover Letter by Cheesewiz2018  •  last post Jan 12th

I'm a relatively green actor looking for representation. Any tips/guidance to making a strong cover letter that stands out despite my lack of credits? I'm having a hard time trying to "sell" myself when the most recent job on my resume is from college... Thank you!

Can we use an LLC for a loan out corporation? by buddingartist2018  •  last post Jan 12th

My daughter is selected for a TV series as a lead actress and is expected to make around 200k this year. Based on many articles on the web, we realized the advantage of using a loan out corporation to maximize tax benefits. The thing is, we have an LLC that is used for software consulting. Can I add my daughter as a member of the LLC and use it as a loan out corporation? Or does a loan out corporation has to be a corporation (INC) and not an LLC? Btw, according to my tax consultant, LLCs are used as pass througha to be treated either as S-Corp or C-Corp so it shouldn’t matter but my tax consultant is based in Bay Area and has no idea the tax treatment necessary for actors in LA.

Looking for young actor(s) - looking for advice on how to go about it. by georgeRgr  •  last post Jan 12th

Hey all, I'm hoping get some advice for my project. I need one or two actors to film a series of promotional videos for an iPhone app I produce (Can't pay a huge amount but will pay fairly). So my question is, what's the best way to go about finding some talented and personable young actors? Is there some place I can post? Location is important since I will want to do the filming and post production (options are London/southern England or France close to Geneva). Any advice would be welcome. All the best

I GOT IN MY FIRST FILM!!! by NeverwuzBoi  •  last post Jan 12th

Ok, so its not really a big film, its more a short film, but its still really a big deal to me! I've always wanted to be a film actor, and this is the first real experience I've ever gotten. Before this, I just got a few leading roles in small local plays, which is still pretty cool, but not the experience I wanted. Can anyone give some tips? I need some tips on how to fake cry. Edit: before anyone asks, this film is a mental health awareness PSA and I got the main role! It does have a lot of scenes with fake crying and panic attacks though, so if anyone could help me out, it would mean a whole lot!

Non-presencial directing. by GreenRiot  •  last post Jan 12th

Soo, i explained recently about a amateur project i'm doing. I'm turning a novel i've written into a audionovel that i'll release as a podcast. It's in portuguese (but i plan to produce a international version later) soo i can't ask for help here. My budget is also zero, so the voice actors that want to participate are on it because they like the story and will have fun doing it. That being said, i'm still learning to voice act and direct AND because of practical reasons the actors will probably have to record their own lines at their available time and send me the audio for editing, which means that i'll not be able to direct them while recording their lines. What should i do to make sure that they'll be able to voice act their parts in a way that i'll not have to ask them to rerecord stuff a lot, and waste the time they are giving away for the project? Is it even worth it to let them take the parts if i'm not present?

I went on my first audition in almost two years by miradox  •  last post Jan 12th

And it was probably one of the worst auditions I’ve had. I misread the casting call, and did not realize I had to book an appointment. Luckily they still let me audition. I got incredibly nervous about 4 seconds into my audition piece and just tanked it. They did not mention the dance audition would be directly after and as such, I was not properly clothed. I gave it my best shot. For the past several months, I have not felt a spark of passion for acting. I know I have talent and potential but for some reason I could not swallow my fear of failure enough to put myself out there. I know this craft takes patience and practice and a LOT of failure and being turned down. I have to remember that one bad audition does not define who I am as an actor and to keep pursuing this with as much dedication as possible. Im a little proud of myself for being able to just go out and audition despite my nerves.

What is the consensus on headshots? by TheaterNerd  •  last post Jan 11th

I’ve seen a lot of headshots at auditions and done a bit of reading online as well but of course there’s a fair bit of conflicting information about what casting directors like to see, as well as preferences evolving and changing over time. What would you say is the general...

School productions on resume? by School-Productions  •  last post Jan 11th

Hi everyone I've been acting for a while now and currently studying theatre in Wales. Maybe a stupid question but I wonder how much school-productions count as experience and how good they are on your resume? At home, I have quite a resume but here in the UK, I have...

Most helpful classes in NYC? by TheaterNerd  •  last post Jan 11th

There is no shortage of classes to take in NYC, which is good because there’s always something else to learn! What classes have you taken? Who have to studied with? Would you recommend them to others?

Acting ambition and advice by JasonRiverThompson  •  last post Jan 11th

Hello everyone, I am trying to get into the acting industry, I have always wanted to be an actor but always talked myself out of it due to trivial reasons such as my accent being a big turn off for directors etc. I have recently registered with Backstage, I live in Kent, UK. Does anyone have any advice? It is time to stop Self-doubting and overthinking. It is time to give it my all and achieve my dreams! Hope you all have a great year. How do you find acting auditions? Also do you apply for international casting calls?

What is a group audition like by Nar8  •  last post Jan 11th

I was told the director will give me one or two lines to read out in a "group audition". So I have to do my audition in front of a group of other actors? That seems nerve wracking lol.

Does this mean i have to do my own monologue for this audition? by Nar8  •  last post Jan 11th

A director near my town is casting for a feature film and the notice says "no experience needed" extras and film actors wanted. I emailed them and they said to drop in at 4pm and they said nothing about if I read a script from myself or if they give me one when I get there? I'm new to acting so sorry if this sounds dumb.

Question about SAG by justsomethrowawayacc  •  last post Jan 11th

So I did a SAG project recently, and I just received a letter detailing how I’m SAG-eligible. I know you aren’t allowed to do non-union projects if you’re formally a SAG member, but what does this specifically imply? Does this mean that once I’m a member, that I can’t be an actor in a student film, for example? Am I ONLY allowed to do SAG-related work?

Demos Aren't Cheap - VO is an Industry by sid_gautama  •  last post Jan 11th

I coach actors a lot. Film/TV actors. They want to make a quick buck and think, "What could be easier than VO?". A lot of of people approach VO this way. They baulk at spending $500 on a demo. Or $500 on a course. They expect to enter an industry investing next to no money or time. It's wild. The idea of spending 10s of thousands of dollars and years to be an RMT or physio or welder or or or...is not a big deal. Even though it will take years to pay off that debt. An average session rate for a commercial is $500. For one job. Then there's buyout. If you're a working voice actor with competitive demos and skills in a decent market, you make good money. It's a career. If you can't read a couple books, take some classes, save for basic home gear, practice and get an industry quality website/demo - then you should probably quit now. Because there are guys and gals out there that put in the work, spend the money and the time, and will be better than you every time. TL;DR: If you treat VO as a cheap afterthought to make money, you're a dork.

The new pay to play landscape. Time to unionize? by voice-artist  •  last post Jan 11th

Hey everyone, Firstly I just want to send a huge amount of respect and collegiate love out to those who have chosen the path of voice acting and other creative pursuits, whether you're just starting out or are are decades into your journey. I'm a veteran voice actor who has recently relocated to the US, and in the past 12 months has delved (plummeted? descended?) into the world of pay to play, double dipping agents, and the union/non-union/union menagerie. It's been fun, I have some clients, a few non-exclusive agents on each coast, I'm a premium member of v123 and have landed a handful of gigs (high profile and way low profile) rendering me solvent in my new homeland (Almost. But hey that's what savings are for right?). I'm considering platinum membership of v123, and premium of [voices.com](https://voices.com) but don't want to dip too much further into savings for this. Question: how is everyone feeling about the new state of client budgets, big commission [voices.com](https://voices.com), the new voice123.com, the race to the bottom of p2p, the ROI of effort of auditions/$earnt, and seemingly more and more jobs going non-union (SAG members chime in here). Is there a world where we collectively move on pay to play sites and shoddy agents to be more transparent/limit commissions? SAG/AFTRA doesn't quite seem to have the clout they once had and it seems the situation is getting worse. Big first post (sorry), but Reddit seems to be the only open forum for reaching consensus. Ben.

Hello! by Amanda Yuchasz  •  last post Jan 10th

Plus I am very excited for the opportunity to be in my first short film later this summer! In the mean time id love if anyone wanted to share some wise words on how I should start in the process taking my acting career further ..
also, I don't know who needs to hear this but just a reminder to keep going for your dreams! anything is possible.
