New Service - For Memorizing Lines by Tomasz Mieczkowski  •  last post Jun 17th

Hi guys, I'm about to roll out a new project of mine over at http://www.goOffbook.com which is intended for actors to learn their lines. It's free to use but I need some testing done. I've tried it with Sides from Actors Access, works okay. I'll announce it on my website over at https://www.webforactors.com next week, but wanted to make sure that I have at least a couple of dozens confirmed uploads before I do so. I'd love to hear what you think. And here's a link to unpublished blog article: https://www.webforactors.com/blog/easy-way-learn-lines

Love the new style by Rob Rutledge  •  last post Jun 17th

The only thing constant is change. Love the update.. It looks like there are a few bugs to work out, but that's part of software development... Keep at it John. Thanks for your great service!

Instagram pod for actors and people in the industry by as00371  •  last post Jun 17th

Hey all, A friend of mine has set up an Instagram pod on WhatsApp where we can post links to our recent posts and get likes and comments from the group, plus new followers. Instagram is becoming a key social media platform for actors and people in the business, I’m sure many of you have seen or read that people have been passed over for roles because of their following / engagement. It’s not the ideal situation but we may as well make the best of it. If you want to be involved, please inbox me and I will send you details. If there are loads of us then we can start more pods to help each other out even further.

How to get access to Breakdowns (NY) for actors? by BrutalManners  •  last post Jun 17th

Hi all, Does anyone know how to get access to the Breakdowns that agents and managers get access to? I'd appreciate your help!

Is there such a thing as a "normal" voice for voice acting (and a lack thereof)? by thr0o00wawayyyyyeet  •  last post Jun 17th

This post is on a throwaway account because of the embarrassing and personal nature of it. I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit to ask this question, but seeing as how my other alternatives were more geared towards the field of singing which I have less interest in, I figured that this is the closest thing. I've wanted to be a voice actress for years, yet every time I've tried to do something, no matter how good the acting, there always seems to be something *wrong* with my voice fundamentally. By that, I mean that there's some distinctly "feminine" factor that just doesn't seem to be present in it that I've never heard anybody else lack. I tried to research the topic, and the most common result I got was about the pitch of my voice. I'm a mezzo-soprano, and even when my voice is at a higher pitch, even when I can sit in it comfortably, it just does not sound feminine. At worst whenever I try to follow the advice for "breathiness" it just ends up sounding like a teenage boy trying to voice a female pornstar and trying too hard to sound seductive. Disregarding the frankly unpleasant analogy just now, I don't particularly have a problem with my voice in day-to-day life. It just seems that this factor alone is holding me back from following this dream and yet it's infuriating how no matter how hard I try I can't come close to sounding like the people in my voice range. The ***only*** times that this seems to be reduced, though not completely fixed are whenever I tighten up my chest and keep my larynx firmly around the middle of my throat or whenever I lean my head back. Three more things in relation to my background that might or might not be relevant are the following: firstly, I'm not a native English speaker. My voice tends to sound rather different in all languages that I speak, some for better, some for worse, though I've completely rid myself of (and possibly even forgotten) my native accent. The other is that I grew up almost exclusively with male friends, and as such, I tended to use my lower range more, which might have lead to the highs being a little underdeveloped. Lastly, I did choir singing for about three years when I was younger, and this same issue lead to me quitting. I thought it would go away with age, and while it's reduced significantly, it's still enough of a problem to get in the way of this dream. If anybody is better versed in the physical aspect of vocal theory or vocal pedagogy in general, even if that means having consulted a professional themselves, please let me know. If necessary, I'll provide audio.

Do people still care about this semantic debate? Actress vs Actor? by Sonny_Crockett_1984  •  last post Jun 17th

Is this an issue? by AsheGames  •  last post Jun 17th

Hello! On my goal of becoming an actor and a voice over actor, I always have something I don’t feel confident about and worry if it will hurt my chances at parts. I have a slight lisp that most people can’t really hear but some can and it’s something I’m self conscious about. Thanks for the advice!!

I can do some voices, any advice. by icoachOars  •  last post Jun 17th

I can do a handful of voices. I’ll randomly do one and people are surprised and say something about doing voices. I never gave it much thought. Figured I would go on Reddit and see what people say. Something like “yeah just go to auditions and see if people like your sound” or “Just upload a video or sound bite of your voices and email that around” The voices I can do include; Meatwad: Aqua teen hunger force Stitch: Lilo and stitch Jar-Jar binks: Star Wars episode one Gollum: Lord of the rings Bobby: Bobby’s world Roz: Monsters inc Gizmo: Gremlims Elmo: Sesame Street There’s a few I think I’m forgetting, but whatever actor does these voices, I can also do the other voices they can do. Every voice here (except roz) feels very similar to do, just making one a little more raspy or high pitch. So my question is, should I look into voice acting? Or am I dumb and these voices are all actually easy for people to do.

Relocating and Need Advice! by caseytatumsgf  •  last post Jun 17th

Hey ya'll! So- I'm an actor in ATL and will be relocating to the NYC market next month. I mainly do theatre, but do film/commercials as well and am represented by an agent in the film market. I'm feeling like I'm in a bit of a dilemma about a couple of things and wondering if anyone had any advice! 1. ) I'm wondering if I still should stay with my agent in ATL and work as an ATL "local hire" even though I obviously won't be living here anymore. Sure, you can always get a last minute flight but the idea of having to do that somewhat stresses me out? Especially for an in-person audition? I get that people do that all the time though. I would hate to miss out on any opportunities and relationships I've built up here in ATL. In an ideal world- I'd rather be submitted to projects that would probably pay for my flight and would understand I'm coming from NYC rather than playing the game of pretending to be an ATL local still... if that makes sense. It's not that I \*couldn't\* do it, it just would be pretty crazy and hectic especially because I do work a full-time job as well (from home.) I'm just curious to get opinions on this because I'm in a quandary lol. Of course most people would be like "go for it be a local hire!" But honestly my main goal in NYC is to work more in theatre anyway (I have far more theatre experience here in ATL as well) so I'm not sure if it's worth the stress to be an ATL local hire, for me personally. 2. ) Is it OK to get another film agent in NYC as well- or would that be frowned upon? My agent did allude to her trying to get NYC breakdowns but I'm not sure if she is going to be able to do that. And I am not sure if an ATL based agent is going to spend necessary attention on just the small handful of people she has in other states...but I could be overthinking this. 3. ) What is the film scene like in NYC? Is it lots of in-person auditions or lots of self tapes like in ATL? 4. ) I would love any advice in securing an agent for theatre in NYC. I'm non-equity but have a pretty decent resume. However my agent does submit me to theatre breakdowns on AA for NYC already. Would a theatrical agent in NYC offer more than this? Any insight into the process would be lovely. THANK YOU!

Best NYC Training by TheBoyWhoCriedDumb  •  last post Jun 17th

I'm a New York City based voice actor and I was looking for a coach or a class to further my journey into the world of voice acting. It seems hard to tell with these classes and coaches who's legit and i was wondering if anyone here had any recommendations for coaching or classes here in the city.

I need some help, I'm struggling with a character and I have to perform in two weeks. by tazzinadicaffeina  •  last post Jun 17th

Hi, I'm an italian amateur, I'm not a professional actress and I've been acting for about 3 years. This year I've been given the part of Renfield in Dracula, because I did well at the audition, but even then it was clear that I couldn't speak loud enough to fill a theatre, but the teacher shrugged it off. Now, I must say that I'm not the only one in my class who has problems with voice, I'm in good company. I've been trying to speak louder, but when I do that my intonation/ speech pattern/ everything is waay off. I can't act while trying to scream (seriously, I could give Tommy Wiseau from the room a run for his money, or I could just be his italian counterpart). I can't do it and I can't leave (for obvious reasons). I can't concentrate and I feel sooo out of place. If I could work with low tones I think I could sort this thing out, but just like this I cannot do it. I don't feel capable. I register myself and I sound bad. I can't do it, is there a way, a method, something that could be helpful not to sound perfect, but at least believable? The problem is that I have an istrionic part, I think they gave me the part because somehow they say that I have "a personality", but I don't feel confortable with this character. Not since I've been asked to speak louder, I can't control my voice and act at the same time. What can I do? I'm really really worried (even though we're amateurs). Problem is that with this character I cannot play it safe, I can't be "normal". I even have to do a scene while among the public (without microphones :S) Tonight I dreamed that I spat my own blood out in the bathroom and that my palate was "falling off". Seriously, help me, I can't do this and I'm not having fun anymore, it's just soo stressful. And the teachers don't help us at all.

Extra Skills and type cast request! by doodlebug_uk  •  last post Jun 17th

Hello there! First time pots here. I'm currently working as a commercial actor/model in Japan but looking to make my move back to the UK an pursue acting career. I have a few modeling head-shots and done a few short films but I am struggling to find my type and direction. *Processing img 6cozwo5d1u431...* My hobbies are horse riding, Mauythai, singing & guitar. I also have military experience and on my return to the UK intend to improve my skills in horse riding and take some sword fighting workshops. I feel that these skills are useful for British actors. In addition to this, I am of course researching the market, making a website and attending classes etc. As far as type goes, I am 28 but I still look quite young with a soft face and kind eyes, this limits the roles I feel I can take to more positive or vulnerable roles. ( I adore tom hardy and would love to play the dark brooding villains but that's not my wheel house yet) So far I have thought of a few types, they are mostly trust worthy or spoiled kind of roles, not sure if that's what i should be going for lemme know what you think: Young entrepreneur Arrogant boss Preacher/priest Young soldier or officer Prince spoiled or thoughtful Unlucky in love Anyway please take a look at my pics and let me know what you think! Your help would be much appreciated! [A recent travel video i did](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_HO9qVC2Co) [Some more images](https://imgur.com/a/jOZPX9g) Thanks!

Is Mr. Cousineau from HBO's Barry a good acting teacher? by nic0lk  •  last post Jun 17th

So I was wondering this but didn't know where I should ask it. I'm currently watching a loving HBO's Barry. It's really like no other show I've seen before. Offbeat and humorous but also really serious and dark at time. This show can reach Parks and Rec levels of humor and Breaking Bad levels of suspense but it juggles both so seamlessly. Anyway I wanted to ask about Mr. Cousineau, the acting teacher. I love Henry Winkler and his cadence (you're the detective, yet I got the confession), but I was wondering if he's actually a *good* acting teacher. There's a small running joke about how he charges everyone all the time, even when they take a day off because a classmate died, but he seems really passionate and like he genuinely cares. He's definitely Putting all he can into his lessons. The core of his teaching seems to be using your real, raw, emotional experience to shape the portray of the character you're playing. The first time we meet him he berates and insults Sally almost to tears, making us think he's an asshole, but then he tells her to use it to complete her scene, where her performance is much more emotional and genuine. He'll tell his students to channel their deepest, darkest moments, even if they don't really want to and even to the point of discomfort, but he'll also let them know that hey, they're just actors, and this is just to make their character more believable. I don't know the first thing about acting theory or what have you, but for a subreddit who would know a thing or two about it, is Mr. Cousineau actually a good teacher who teaches good acting lessons? I'd love to know.

What are some of the best secondary cities for actors? by wolfguardian72  •  last post Jun 16th

By secondary, I mean not LA, NYC, or Atlanta. I was planning on moving to Portland, OR soon and was wondering if that’s a good city for actors or if there are other good ones out there.

How do I handle the inviting of my agent to my show? by daffodil91  •  last post Jun 16th

Hi! I’m an actress in the Chicago area and I just recently signed with an agent. I am currently in a theatre production and I sent her an update to let her know what I’m up to and to invite her to the show. She said she’s interested in attending. How do people usually handle this sort of thing? Let them get tickets and attend? Ask them when and put aside a couple of my personal comps for them? Ask the theatre if they have any industry comps/discount so that I can get the tickets for my agent and they don’t have to pay? I’ve never actually had an agent who said they were interested in coming. For all I know this was a “I’d be interested but I won’t actually come” but I want to make sure I handle this appropriately!
