How to get a break as an actor in Hollywood by Dorein Paul  •  last post May 18th

Hi, my name is dorein. I am an international grad student from India. Came here finished my masters in CS from a shady school that got deacredited and so I am pursuing a second masters in Information system security. Since all the money that I saved up(or my mother's rather) went into the first degree that is useless now. I am unable to pay up for the second degree. Why the heck am I saying all this? I really didn't know how else to start my monkey back story and garner some sympathy. Having said all that I have least interest in IT. But I do have great interest in entertaining people and being critically acclaimed as an actor; who can intrigue the minds of people. If that's a little too much. Just tell me where to start applying for the casting couch.

Thanks and have a great day readers.

Back to square one by Christina  •  last post May 18th

Hi there, My name is Christina, and I am just getting back into the acting industry. I started taking classes and modeling at age 14. I was signed to an agency for two years until it went bankrupt. I took the time off and finished school and furthered my education...

Follow up by Mamcita  •  last post May 18th

So I just read the awesome Backstage article about actess Amy Aquino and how you shouldn't take rejection personally. In the article, Ms. Aquino says to get feedback from every audition. How does one do that? I get no feedback from my agent unless it's a callback. If it's not...

Are there any agents on here willing to answer PM'ed questions? *Not looking for representation, just trying to get some answers on things* by caalittlemiss  •  last post May 18th

I know it's a longshot, but I figure we're all anonymous on here, and we're all human. I have questions that no one can seem to answer. As the title says, I am not trying to contact you for representation. I will not send you my materials or anything like that (you don't even need to tell me who you are or what agency you're from or anything like that), I simply want answers to questions that I have from an agent themselves as opposed to other actors. Other actors: I appreciate your help, but please, don't comment on this one :) If you are an agent who happens to be willing to answer questions, please PM me. I honestly don't think anyone will lol but here's hoping.

Becoming an Actor? by kyledrumsx  •  last post May 17th

Let’s just say I wanted to become an actor. Maybe not a lead role, for the most obvious reason: I have 0 experience. But I’ve always wanted to be in a Marvel film, and with comic book movies on the uprise, it’s definitely something I want to land. Where do I start? I dig through the internet daily on ways I can achieve this, but come up empty handed. Any advice would be so appreciated.

Reels on Actor's Access? by Throwawaywts  •  last post May 17th

Just made my first reel. I'll probably tweak it after some critique, but I'm trying to add it to my Actor's Access account. I know that they charge $22 a minute for uploading video, but why would I pay that when I can just attach the vimeo link to my resume or "notes" section when I submit for roles? Or will this make me look bad?

Would it be considered faux pas to submit to my friend’s agent? by dondusman  •  last post May 17th

Two years ago my friend who’s been in the business for a long time told me to submit headshots/resume to his agent who’s also been in the business for a long time (30+ years, I looked them up and they’re pretty prestigious) and to give him a heads-up when I do. Since then I’d had to take a hiatus from acting and we haven’t interacted much (busy schedules) beyond the occasional Facebook like. I’ve gotten back into the game recently, and sent him a message asking if I could still send the materials to his agent. He saw the message and didn’t respond, which I took to mean no. I don’t want to impose or overstep any boundaries. I have practically nothing to offer him career-wise in return for the really generous offer he made. I really look up to him as an actor and don’t want to seem like a leech or anything, but at the same time I can’t help but feel like I missed a huge opportunity. Should I still submit, even though he hasn’t given me a sign that I still could? Or should I just accept the fact that the door’s closed and move on? Thanks!

Headshot-Age Range-Character Type Post - May 17 by AutoModerator  •  last post May 17th

Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.

Horatio questions? by kelevra206  •  last post May 17th

So, I was recently cast as Horatio in a production of Hamlet. I haven't even read any Shakespeare in over a decade (I know and I'm sorry). As an actor, I'm trying to flesh out this character who seems to be more of a literary device than an actual human being. The man just seems too...good. He's intelligent, honest, loyal. I'm having difficulty figuring out what he wants in the grand scheme of things. Obviously he loves Hamlet like a brother, and wants the best for him, but what does he want for himself is the question I'm trying to find an answer for. He's not here for money or power or even honorary title. If he's here just to help Hamlet out of a sense of honor and/or duty, and he has no other objectives for himself, he's going to be a very boring character. What am I missing? Even half-baked theories that I can keep in mind for my next read-through would be much appreciated.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's process - does anyone have articles or insights into his technique? by Jacks_Rabbit  •  last post May 17th

Hoffman is one of my favorite actors. Many have said the best actor of his generation. *Highly* skilled on camera and on stage. He studied at NYU and trained with Tony Greco (teacher of Lee Strasberg's methodology) for three decades [article link](https://www.indiewire.com/2014/02/philip-seymour-hoffmans-acting-teacher-remembers-the-actor-he-was-willing-to-journey-to-very-complicated-places-30403). I'm curious whether anyone has additional insights into the fundamentals of his process. Thanks!

Best way to tackle the craft from a remote, culturally dead area? by Tragabigzanda  •  last post May 16th

Have some prior acting experience (a couple classes in college), would love to get back into it for my own enrichment. Problem is that I live in a very rural area, and there aren't even good community theaters or anything like that within a couple hours of me. Any great books/exercises/methods I can explore in my own time? I could have my spouse work as my scene partner if need be.

There Are No Stupid Questions - May 16 by AutoModerator  •  last post May 16th

Reproductions is launching a Screenplay Contest! by Ahbuu  •  last post May 16th

Hey all, Long time lurker here. I know this is the acting subreddit but I figured there are lots of us who also write! After lots of convincing, me and a coworker got our job to hold a Screenplay contest where *the winning script will be produced and filmed by us!* Reproductions \(based in NYC\) is known for headshot printing and about a year ago, they started Video team \(which is just me, my coworker and our boss\). We've been filming Demo footage for actors as part of our day\-jobs and as you can imagine, it's hard to find the time to film your own stuff when you have a full\-time job. Even though some of the stuff we shoot is great, it's not always what we WANT to be filming. SO! Our plan was to hold a screenplay contest and film an awesome script, something we can really be proud of. And BAM! It's happening! Hurray! We're accepting short film & web\-series screenplays and there are certain creative limitations. [Definitely click here for more details](https://mailchi.mp/reproductions.com/reproductions-is-launching-a-screenplay-contest-get-your-short-filmed?e=d099234511) Hope you submit, feel free to share with whoever. We love filmmaking and want to make good art. Feel free to ask me any questions too!

pronunciation help?? by mutecute  •  last post May 16th

weird question but can anyone recommend any online resources to learn american pronunciation? I just figured actors need really clear voices so maybe you would know of some? I'm mute, and I really really really want to learn to talk. I couldn't get speech therapy in school because I wasn't ESL so I couldn't fix this earlier. I'm in Toronto and I've searched high and low for pronunciation help, but all the services I've found only accept ESL/ Stroke survivors so if any actors know of any services in Toronto that help with pronunciation I'd be much obliged (like dialect coaches for american accents or something, doesn't have to be a speech therapist). not mute as in "you need to get over your fear of talking" I'm mute as in "your tongue and lips don't move quickly enough, they don't know where to go" (due to childhood parental neglect - doesn't matter, not here to turn this into a sob story). Which lead to incorrect pronunciation and tone (it is possible to learn tone? Apparently lip position and pronunciation affects tone so I'm doubly screwed). Sorry for the rant but I really want to learn, I don't have any friends bc I can't express myself verbally, which leads to sucky social skills, which leads to no friends, which leads to, you get it, its a vicious cycle that is eating me alive. also this is the only medium in which I'm understood so I tend to go a bit overboard. sorry for the rant, I just really want to change. tl:dr could anyone recommend any online resources/ people in Toronto to help with pronunciation? -if this isn't the right subreddit to post this in could anyone redirect me to one that is? thanks!
